Does anyone in the area have a mister we could Oxine the chickens with? If not can I use a spray bottle or something similar?

I would get a humidifier from the drugstore, they are less than $20. Put the chicken in a dog crate, the humidifier in front of the door and throw a towel over the whole thing. Treat the bird for an hour, twice per day.

So PLEASE feel free to tempt me to drive out ...What do you have available?

blessings,
Flowers

I'd have to go see what's in the hatcher. I locked down 80+ eggs last night that are due on Wednesday.

Thanks for the support everyone, it really helps a lot

Yes, Pro Biotics will help along with the oxine to help kill it.

Way back in like February I made a deal with a colleague: I would brood his chicks and he would build me a coop with materials I supply. Poor guy is going through financial troubles now and he can't build the coop and may not want the chicks soooo now I will likely have 8-10 more hatchery chicks left than I intended to have:

That wouldn't be a bad thing except I have already totally fallen for the potential in my incubator and as sweet as he is I don't want to push my husband over the edge

It will work out...I hope...

I call it their spa treatment! I had a few chicks this spring that after having cocci and being treated with Sulmet, developed gurgling (is that called rales?) when they breathed. I suspected mold but maybe it was a bacterial thing. I treated them twice a day with oxine in a humidfier using the exact method Deb recommends. (Except that I didn't think about the towel.) I purchased the humidifier last year at Target. I also gave them plain yogurt and probiotics & electrolytes in their water. One group of 5 chicks had 2 or 3 of them breathing like this so I went ahead and treated the whole group. They loved it and stayed right by the door just breathing it in! All of the ailing chicks in both groups recovered and are thriving. I love Oxine!

We are, it was checked before we moved in in November. There were those heavy rains that flooded everything, so not sure if something could have changed. We don't drink it because it tastes bad, but we do use it for the animals.

The woman at UC Davis said there isn't a way to know if it's normal ecoli or an infection without extensive testing, like ultrasound or nercroscopy. She said Alice may have some kind of internal defect that make her version of normal a little paler and puffier. She was helpful, but didn't have much advice to offer. I don't know

Going to get them some yogurt now. I just want her and my other chickens to all be okay.
Petrock posted a link last week on making your own lactobacillus, very easy and cheap. You can even spray the ground with it! It was a youtube video, like Korean natural farming, I think. I am going to try it.

My first lactobacillus batch finished on Saturday. I fed the cheese top to my dog & chickens. They loved it! The bacteria culture is in a glass container in the refrigerator. I haven't decided it I am going to mix it with molasses or not. I started a new batch of fermented feed and inoculated it with the lactobacillus. It is doing it's thing on the counter and should be ready to feed to the birds in 2 or 3 more days. I also mixed the stuff left on the bottom with some ground grains, drained it the next day and fed it to the chickens. I didn't want to waste a drop! The left over liquid, I dumped into my trash can composter. It was getting a little smelly and the lactobacillus totally got rid of the smell by the next day. It is amazing stuff!!!

Okay! I already have a warm mist humidifier, so that should be easy! Do you mix the Oxine into the water or put it in the little channel on top where you put Vicks or whatever when you have a cold? How much Oxine do you put in? I bought some Vet RX today, should I treat her with that until I get the Oxine?

This is really interesting! I don't know anything about it, but thank you for the info. I can see I'm going to have to look into fermented feed. Where do you acquire it? Sounds like a whole area of expertise I need to dip my toes into.

We completed the silkie shed run this weekend. It is open so I'm a little nervous about it. They will be in the shed at night that is predictor proof. I have not seen any possums or raccoons during the day, I suppose we will find out if I'm missing them. We did have the can for a month and saw nothing during the day..

The PO still does COD's, most of the COD's I deliver are for diet pills and other suplements though... I've never seen them for eggs. My office is very good about calling for pick-up on hatching eggs, and chicks though.

Intruders!!! They keep coming to our pond and trying to grub with my waterfowl.

Great photography! And I love the EE's and the ducks! Ugh, yeah we have so many geese on our property. Their fave pastime is too poo on the dock and the German Shepherds fave pastime is to clean it up....
