Yep, I know this as well.

One of my one week old chicks is doing a wierd hiccup/gagging thing and hasn't stopped. It's breathing, and makes a peeping sound some of the time. I checked it's throat to make sure there wansn't anything stuck, and it's crop is empty. I also gave it some water/vitamin mix. Any other suggestions?

Give it some olive oil. Soak a small piece of bread in olive oil and get it to eat it, or dribble it on it's beak to get it to drink the oil. It might help pass whatever is stuck.

Thank you. I am hoping that really is the problem and everything clears up. I have read a few stories lately of diseases causing life-long consequences for the chicken owners (keeping a closed flock, not being able to sell eggs, etc) and do feel lucky that that is probably not the case right now.

and with such timing: i'm leaving town tomorrow afternoon until saturday, but this afternoon noticed that one of the new Amelias is a bit puffed up & acting tired, standing off by herself and closing her eyes... arghh! they've had yogurt several times in the past few days, as i've been trying to use stuff in the 'fridge up -- and i've now scrubbed out their waterer & refilled with water with corid added -- nothing else i can do at this point, since i'll be gone all week. can only hope the corid helps, but your difficulties with Alice, Deerling, have got me concerned that there's some kind of bacteria or etc. that's present here, that some chickens just can't deal with (i've lost two chicklets in the past 8 months, one a delaware only about 8 weeks old, and then the original Amelia when she was about 20 weeks or so -- both just got quiet and inactive, and died after 4 or 5 days, although i didn't have corid for the first & the second may not have ever drunk enough for it to work...)

concerned, and wishing i wasn't leaving town!

Oh no Do you want me to do anything? I wouldn't mind going up to give them extra yogurt and probiotics or just check on them in general. We're getting quite good at biosecurity trying to keep our silkie babies safe. Are you on well water also? We're going to have ours tested asap.

The Cinnamon Queen and the Golden Comet on here appear to be different from crossing the two Delaware/RIR, or is it that I am just missing the whole concept here? These two the Cinnamon Queen and the Golden Comet appear to lay more than any of the others. Even the "production red" which I was sort of starting to think these were all the same type of bird with just different names. i.e. Production Red, Red Star, Golden Comet.....

They would be sexlinked. Meaning 1st crosses you can tell but not after the first cross

Ron, I'm so jealous of your DD's boyfriend! I would love to have you for an in-law. Mine are mean (for real. MIL called me a witch for having a pet rat? And that's a drop in the bucket, of course). Maybe, if you would be so kind, you could adopt my husband? Then I wouldn't feel so bad about asking your advice all the time

You know I was thinking that with the readout offset, it might be easier to read!
I am so jealous your coop is done..... I need my coop done to stop stressing over it.

When I got my first set of chickens I used to just go sit outside with them in the coop. Not so much at night because they all went to sleep, but during the day. I was peaceful and fun.
I will do my best to keep you all updated.

I get a little behind though sometimes. I am one of those people that can't pick just one thing, I have to have everything.....lol.
I just had the blue ones (wheaten ameracauna supposedly, now I am skeptical will all the EE controversy) shipped to me from a BYC'er that did a great job packing them. Something like this, paper towel, small bubble wrap, big end up in a box, with that synthetic fluffy stuff you can get a fabric stores, stuffed in any holes, and that box was put inside a bigger box with sawdust around it. They all arrived in tact, but the aircells are a little wobbly compared to the ones I picked up from Deann.

On the outside of the box she wrote to hold for pick up with my number but that didn't happen and now we know why. I am in Roseville, and it is plenty busy out here too. No special service and she obviously didn't know the rule to put it on the label either.

We will see what hatches.

Do you have hawks? I thought the Silkies were small enough that hawks will take them. And with their Pouf they can't see the hawks either.

No I have to build more myself for my Black Penedesenca and my Empordanesa coop needs a upgrade.
I also need to build the big one for the layer flock..

Hawks are migrating again.. Watch those chickens

yes well water, but my well is fantastic, the water is delicious, and am high enough up on the mtn (and the well is deep enough, 150 ft) that it's unlikely to have been affected by any recent rain or etc.

and i'd hate to ask you to come visit when you've never been here before, and i'm sure my neighbor can manage -- it's not that hard to mix the corid into their water, and i've started them with a large quantity that should last several days (i know it ideally ought to be changed each day, but this way at least i know they are getting it). but thank you for the offer! i just feel badly for Amelia One, who was so frisky and healthy coming from Ron's place, and is now acting all mopey.

The Korean lactobacillus that Pet Rock posted about would be a great thing to get at your place. South land Organics sells a version of that. You spray it on the dirt and it gobbles up the bad stuff. They sell it as an odor and ammonia killer.

If she does not make it, send her in for Necropsy and after you get the all clear at your place I will give you a replacement Amelia(free). I have 5 more and I want to keep two of them.

awww, you are far too kind -- i'm hoping the corid will help, and/or she was just feeling picked on by the rest of the flock & will perk back up. i will look into the lactobacillus once i'm back from LA! (ugh, not my favorite city...)
