Day 20 of incubation today. I'm completely terrified I had the humidity too high the whole time and they'll all drown

Incubating sure does a number on the nerves, eh?

My contractor is starting the duck pond project today. :yiipchick

It's going to be a 10' by 15' rectangle, plumbed for easy draining & cleaning. He's building it partially above ground (less digging to do) out of pressure treated lumber. We've planned for it to be between two and two-and-a-half feet deep. The flock of ducks and both ganders will be able to SWIM in more than just circles, as they currently do in the round 300 gallon stock tank.

Whoot!

Hey guys, another quick question...I'm using sand for the chicks in my brooder, but I've heard Sweet PDZ can help keep down odors so I want to use a bit of that in there. Should I get the granulated kind, or the powder?

I use the granulated--That is what TSC had.

I have leg bars and marans and drive to novato frequently. I also have 2 Icelandic hen but no rooster. I might end up selling them if you decide you want older girls.
So ladies and gents if I were to one day have a broody hen or two and if at that time I had not been totally smitten with yet another breed I would like to know where I can get eggs and/or culls of the following:

Silver Penciled PR
Icelandics
Welsummers
Barnvelders
Creme Legbars
EOs
Golden Laced Brahmas...the newest addition to the ever expanding list

I think what I want to work on at this point is not breeding anything to SOP but rather obtaining eye candy for my yard and my egg basket.  I grew up showing sheep and horses and am not interested at this point in showing chickens

Thanks I just want to know who to contact when the time comes :-)

ETA prefer Yolo, Marin, Napa, Sonoma, and Mendocino counties because it's an easy drive

It is wonderful that she hatches! Help her out--get her a good thermometer and a hygrometer, especially if she is hatching Marans. They really do better on the dryer side. She may need a better candler if she does that with the students. Good for you getting the eggs for her too
I ask before I give legs if they candle! Lol. They have Ua few of the little Icelandic eggs they are easy to candle. If I accidently slipped them showgirls I will die! Or steal them back!!
She has a nice candeler. If there are any SG's, i will keep them for you!!
I like that smiley! The 2nd grade class next to my daughters did a hatch in February with a rented Genesis from 4H that had the two smaller windows. She put a regular ole thermometer on the eggs for temps and away they went. They were hand turning too, which means on the weekend they just let them go for TWO HOLE DAYS with nothing! No turning, no checking, no water refills.... in February too, it was still kind of cold! *Gasp* And out of about 9 eggs, 6 hatched. So I am thinking less is more in some cases and all of us on here are REALLY interested in our eggs doing well, so we are all a little obsessive. On the other hand IF we had been watching, hovering, adjusting, candling, etc. like I am prone to do, then maybe one or two more or maybe all of them would have hatched. OR god forbid..... less would have hatched!!! We will never know for sure.

The point of that observation was just to share what I witnessed, and in the end it was a good learning experience for the class too! I second the Ron is super helpful comment!!! Well since you are a few days before me, then I guess I have to live vicariously through you! I also have shipped and non shipped eggs. I am at the boring, I can't touch stage until at the earliest this Sunday. I need three more spaces to put my eggs so they all have a spot in the turner. Do you think it is safe getting rid of any that look like they are not developing at that time? Or is it too soon? Congrats for your son! I know nothing about Tennis but it all sounds good!

Stack em! Also teachers usually use local eggs they hatch Better then shipped.
Hey guys! Quick question. I'm going to buy a heat lamp today for my chicks, who will be here around the 1st of May. Do I need both the white & red bulbs? Or just red?
I vote for ceramic bulbs. I'm loving them. Got mine on amazon but they have lower wattae at pet stores.
I didn't.

Harm I got it too.... are they stalking us?? Are we being reported???
May I ask you guys a question please? Are white silkie chickens yellow or white as a chick? does anyone have any photos they could show me? Thanks a lot!
They are white.
