Well I have come to the realization that I have too many hens....

I am getting over 20 eggs a day and I haven't had much luck selling the eggs around here to people I know. I haven't listed on Craig's List because I didn't want people coming over to the house to buy eggs. My refrigerator is full, I could freeze some but then my freezer would be full too... so I am going to sell off some of my egg layers. These are not rare chickens, and I got them originally so I could decide which breed I liked and to get some broodys. I believe I have decided...

I thought my old EE girls had given up laying last year so I purchased a bunch of chicks to replace them last March and some more to figure out who I liked. However, it appears my old girls weren't finished yet (either that or they really love the fermented feed I have been giving them). The 4 old girls are laying as well as the 10 other hens.. so that's 14 from the large breed pen and between 5 and 8 from the bantam pen - and 3 more from the silkies (although I am going to set those).. I am overrun with too many eggs and I have more pullets growing up, yikes!

I have a cage of mixed bantams that I need to sort out too - most of them are young mutts from my two broodies (7) so I will probably have some fun when they get older. I am not sure yet - but the new ones might all be hens...

EDITED:

Ok, I did some research in my area and the hens sell from 20-25 dollars each, roosters around 10-15. I already found one person on Craig's List looking for Americauna (which means feedstore EEs) hens and a rooster, contacted them and will see if they reply. If anybody is interested in the Silver Laced Wyandottes or the big huge Blue Laced Red Wyandotte let me know. They would be 20.00 each.

I was rooting around on the web for legbar info (getting more and more excited ) and almost fainted over some of the pricing. While I want quality birds and egg color and production ... My husband may cut off my quest at that cost.

What is a good fair price for white or creme legbars? And who currently has eggs, pullets, or hens who won't ask my to chop off my legs as payment?!!

That is a good question. Inquiring minds want to know! I've seen pullet chicks for sale on craigslist for $45 for a day old while the boys are only $10. Greenfire sells them for $59 for day old pullets and $19 for day old cockerels. I have fallen in love with the 3 pullets that I have and I know that I can get a cockerel for free or less than $10. But I would love to hatch out a few more or add 2 or 3 more pullets to the flock. Those of you who have these sought after breeds, how do you decide on pricing?

Fire up the incubator and find hatching eggs. That is still the best way to get rare breeds.

Greenfire winds up costing a lot due to min shipping numbers.
There is no way that I am ever going to pay Greenfire prices unless my husband finally wins the lottery on his one ticket/week!

So I'm gonna have to chop off at least one leg?

I do love my bator but that 0% hatch was so sad! Ill have to suck it up.

Ron but 60 per egg! Someone has to be lower ?!? I'm tempted to pimp out my husband (he is a general contractor) in trade but he is so busy in the summer !!!

Update:

Someone from New Castle CA is selling 10+ cream legbar eggs and they have been selling for 50.00 per auction. The same person sells Norwegian Jaehorns on there too.

If I had a good hatch rate(Very close to me--I might go pick it up myself) I might spend 6 or so $$ per chicken. I might even see if I could get on the sellers list for failed auctions and see if I could get a deal, so $40.00 for 10+ eggs.

My Bresse chicks cost me $50.00 and I have 11 of them.

A Man a Plan and an Incubator!

Color as in different egg colors? Here is a pic of my Langshan eggs along with three lighter colored SPPR eggs in the center. I was pleased with the darker color that they lay. I always know which egg is a Langshan egg. In my backyard flock, I have a hard time telling the difference between my Barred Plymouth Rock, Silver Laced Wyandotte, Speckled Sussex, Coronation Sussex, and Buff Brahma eggs. They are all a light brown.

Pretty pretty egg display! I was referring to color as in feathers AND eggs :-) I like the darker brown, they look almost red brown like my red stars lay and I am interested but I think that for awhile anyway I have to hold off. Thanks though. Have yours gone broody. I hear they are good mommies.
That is so cute! Is that a Barred? Frizzled's are on my list if we find d a place with property later on.
I am not sure of the difference between barred and cuckoo...I think barred is more defined or something but yes this is a barred something or other and very cute! SandHill preservation sells frizzled chicks and if I can't find any locally I may go that route when the time comes though I am reluctant to go with a hatchery now that I know all of you all can help me get my fix. MossyOak if I end up ordering some I will let you know and you can get in on the order. It wouldn't be for awhile as in Months down the road but I will let everyone on the thread know when I do it if I do it.

My first Langshan from Privet hatchery went broody last spring when she was 1 yr old. She was a great sitter but on day 18 we made the mistake of leaving our young cattle dog out with the chickens and when we came home, Bijou was dead in the middle of the yard. She had no wounds on her but we are assuming that the dog tried to play with her when she didn't back down. That was a hard lesson to learn. We popped the eggs into the incubator and 3 out of 4 hatched. I think that she would have been a wonderful mama hen if she had gotten the chance.

I have been selling my ccl pulled for 25 - 30. Look for ccl legs on bYC rather then Rba. They are all the same stock unless you want the new lines ccl, then you are going to pay for it.
The went gong for 60/egg anymore, more like 50/6 or less.

I use the granulated--That is what TSC had.

Thanks! I picked up a 20lb bag of it
How much Sweet PDZ should I use with the sand? I just want to use enough to keep the chicks from smelling. The brooder will have 6 to 8 chicks, and is a little less than 4x4
