Any bakers here? I am wanting to make this cake for Mark: http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/2007/06/the_best_chocol/comment-page-2/#comments but don't have a sheet cake pan. I have two rounds I could use or a 9x13 glass one. Which of those would be better, and how long would I cook it? I guess I'll probably try with the rounds and just test it as it gets near the end of baking.

You can make it in the 9x13 pan. It will take closer to 30 min.

Tip: replace the boiling water with strong coffee!

what is PDZ?

3 cheers for pip!!!

I know I SAID I wasn't going to peak at my eggs but Renee wanted me to and when I did this is what I saw...The Prairie Rangers, her dual pupose project bird, look the most promising. I have 3 of them and can see veining in all. I think the 3 Part. Chateclers are all questionable. Two are clear at the top and dark at the bottom and I can't see veins, the other is clear at the bottom and dark and the top and I can't see veins. as far as the other six eggs I haven't a clue. Something is going on but I can't tell what. When I candle the green eggs they light up all neon but I can't see into them well enough/I am not experienced enough to know. The Orps and Rocks I can see into more clearly but it's the same story

Now if everything were like a Dorking egg, life would be simpler. That's like having a little window into the egg and is VERY satisfying

I think my Ray was shooting blanks after all

There is one Australorp egg that looks promising but of the 7 of his that I put in the bator 6 are totally clear when compared with the others...I think what I was seeing before was the yolk or something. Now the 6 eggs from my uncles red pen all seem to have clear veining

I think I will remove any totally clear eggs tomorrow. That's Day 7 then we will see what happens with the rest. Hopefully my husband and son will alert me to funky odors since I can't smell but I have heard too many stories of people giving up on eggs only to find perfectly formed babies in the eggtopsy to not give the questionable ones a shot.

My girls are happy! They have been out since about 3:45 and dust bathing, basking and scratching. They are such a nice little flock.

ETA: Why am I not satisfied hmmmmmm

That would be great! We are in town, but looking for a place outside city limits. Hopefully by the end of the year I can add more girls (ssshhhhh, don't tell my husband I said that).
We are great secret keepers as well as enablers here don't you worry

I have only had 5 birds from Privett. Our local feed store gets their birds from there. I have been impressed with them. My blue Langshan had good coloring and a decent body shape & tail for a hatchery bird. I would have used her in my breeding program with no problem. My buff Brahma is a big beautiful bird, too. Then we had 3 speckled sussex who were also nice looking birds but not as big as SQ birds.
I have heard that Privetts SS run smaller. I am OK with that just want some speckles and some broodiness!
THERE'S A PIP
THERE'S A PIP!!

I can't even...!

I have some soaking in the French Press for just that purpose! Thanks Ron! You give good advice about so many things! If I had known you as a teenager maybe I would have made better dating decisions

I had a hard time with the green eggs, too. I didn't toss any until Day 10, just to be sure, and then the ones I couldn't tell on I checked again at Day 14. There are two in there still that I couldn't ever see into (very dark speckled ones) but they don't smell, so here's hoping!

Sorry about Ray. Maybe now that it's heading into Spring he'll do better? I've been too afraid to eggtopsy, too. I doubt that I will this go-round.

That recipe is almost identical to my family recipe that we call Texas Sheet Cake! It is soooo good! My mom used to make them for school bake sales. They are way better than any brownie that I have ever had! We use sour milk instead of buttermilk and don't put the nuts in the icing. I've been trying to be so good with my diet and now I NEED some Texas Sheet Cake! And I have sheet cake pans!!! Enjoy!!!

Me Too! I have two pips in the Black Penedesenca eggs. I candled them this morning and thought only one was still going!

This will be the first shipped Penedesenca for me to hatch! and with two there will be a buddy!

So they cost me 30 dollars with shipping, so 15 dollars per chck...Not too bad! I hope one of them is a cockeral for Jason....

I was talking about the Cream Legbars.

No, mine originally were from Dick Horstman. Very nice leg color.

So I'm gonna have to chop off at least one leg?

I do love my bator but that 0% hatch was so sad! Ill have to suck it up.

Ron but 60 per egg! Someone has to be lower ?!? I'm tempted to pimp out my husband (he is a general contractor) in trade but he is so busy in the summer !!!

On the CL, PM me.................I try to be fair with my BYC friends and I'm getting around three eggs per day from my girls.

I use sand in all my runs.

:yuckyuck   That is a good question.  Inquiring minds want to know!  I've seen pullet chicks for sale on craigslist for $45 for a day old while the boys are only $10.  Greenfire sells them for $59 for day old pullets and $19 for day old cockerels.  I have fallen in love with the 3 pullets that I have and I know that I can get a cockerel for free or less than $10.  But I would love to hatch out a few more or add 2 or 3 more pullets to the flock.  Those of you who have these sought after breeds, how do you decide on pricing?

Someone in Santa Rosa just posted on craigslist....Cream Legbar chicks. Pricing wasn't too bad.
