Deb, what variety of turkeys are you incubating?

Pam, if you were closer, I would help you out with the King Feed. Do all the pallets have to be the same kind? Do they give any discount for buying in bulk?

Our first baby just hatched!!

(I'm really restraining myself from using all caps here, guys. Hope you appreciate that

). There are 10 other pips!! None of the store bought eggs have pipped, I wonder if they'll take longer. I have to admit this whole process has reminded me a little of being pregnant and giving birth, but without the physical discomfort. The two eggs next to the one that hatched are the most active, which makes me wonder if there's a hot spot or something. They have been moved around during their incubation, though, so not sure.



The sweetest chick I have ever seen

I'm feeling a little worried about the one next to it. It has that big piece chipped away and I can see it moving, but it has that off colored spot on the membrane. How normal is that?

Anyway, I'm unspeakably excited and in love. I'm uploading videos to YouTube so I can post them, although the commentary is probably shrill.

Big Daddy's Mom...not stepping out but I do zip over there to catch up on some of the fun. You can join us too. I am doing a hatch but it's not turkeys and it isn't due on 5/5 but they let me play anyway. It's fun and people are letting their hair down and some of the stuff makes me lol. Plus you learn things about how different farm animals go a courtin. Hmmmm sounds a lot lot here.

ETA I switched feeds and wormed at about the same time and the poop tray in the coop is vastly improved! The King Layer Pellet is great. My spoiled bunch misses their crumbles but I told them that we weren't going back.

How big are their pellets? Mine are eating pellets now but they're on the smaller side.

I finally have hatched a shipped Penedesenca Chick! One was out this morning and the second was almost out.

Sadly the one that is out looks like a pullet....Just kidding you can't tell gender with Black Penes. Also, I am not a Rooster Whisperer like Happy Chooks....

I will post pictures of them tonight.

I have a theory that eggs talk to each other. When they get ready to hatch the tapping sounds get louder, and any eggs that hear that start tapping louder too - like they get excited... Sometimes you can start them by tapping on the plastic covers. An old timer told me they actually put their eggs touching so the sounds can travel to the next egg through the shell. Then of course there is the peeping - like the chicks are calling to other chicks to come out and play..

Hatching is SOO much fun!.. and also nerve wracking in case anything goes wrong...

The off colored spot looks fine to me.

That actually makes a lot of sense to me. It is so much fun! And since I can't give birth once or twice a year as I would love to, this is a great option.
