California - Northern

Adorable! I thought the black ones were JG's for a second, but I looked closely and saw the feathered legs.

Thanks for that info!

I tried to take some new pics. Oh. My. Goodness. Someone tell those chickens to stop moving! I will try again later today after the kids go to bed. These chickens were running all over!

I call him Roo. He is the only one we have named. I am pretty sure I want to keep him. We may have to build a second coop - one for my Buffs and one for my BC marans. LOL
He has no tail, is feathering little differently than the other 3 Buff Orps we have. He also behaves differently. He challenges EVERYone.

Random horrible shots because getting anything in focus was a joke...

She was looking for mealworms...in my shoe? :P

What you may not realize is she was almost on top of me! haha

Chicken Huddle.

I had given them some live mealworms. (also gave them some chickgrit)

They did not want to go back into their brooder. Chickens are not herdable like ducks. Or if they are- I do not speak their language! LOL

They are just barely over 2 weeks old I think? Hatched June 2 I think.

Delawares are fairly fast for a Dual Purpose breed. Capayvalleychcick(Kim) can tell you how fast.
It really depends on how big the birds are in that particular strain. My Delawares are a work in progress and I butcher them at about 5 months. My Dorkings are slower maturing and usually aren't ready until 7 months.

@TheOmletRanch, I just visited your website also, I am amazed, so beautiful! It looks like lots of time went into it.

Your Welcome.

I would worry if they still panted when it was below 80 degrees--I have read that gape worms can cause them to pant or gasp. Normally, panting is the only way they cool down, kind of like dogs sticking their tongues out.

I haven't had one cooked in the shell, but boy was I worried about it today. My Dad cooked an egg in a cast iron skillet whe we lived south of Red Bluff. It was closer to 115 that day.

Sanoma used to be one of the biggest producers of eggs in CA. I am happy to see you are raising chickens there.

Ron

Thanks for this info, Ron. I read about gape worms and don't think that's the problem, but it's the kind of thing I was worried about. This pullet just doesn't seem to tolerate heat as well as the others. I can sympathize, I'm the same way!

Not so much egg production in the county now, although Petaluma still has its yearly Butter & Eggs celebration. Vineyards are squeezing everything out. My dad bought an old homestead in Santa Rosa over 40 years ago, and in addition to the main barn, there were several outbuildings, including a huge poultry barn (too big to call a coop). Unfortunately, it was falling apart and beyond repair (like most everything else on the property!), so it was taken down. Not many of those old chicken houses left, but I see one every once in a while. All made of redwood. Would cost a fortune today. Times have changed!

Hope you and your chickens are getting cooler weather.

This is going to be one heck of a poultry party! I am really looking forward to it.

Quote: I did look into heat tolerant breeds and found out that Orpingtons are not one of them. They apparently do not like the heat. Lucky for me, Black Australorps are heat tolerant.

Temperatures are going down, thank goodness. It is not supposed to go over 100 for a couple of weeks, but will be in the high 90s next week.

Can you get some of that redwood and make reclaimed coops and runs with it? Those look so nice and retro.

Ron

Quote: I don't know Cheryl. I did register with your website and have yet to get any emails and etc.

I thought it said I would get some kind of one time discount too.

I will have to find out where Clayton is.

Sounds like fun.

I'll research to see if gold sex links are heat intolerant. My BO doesn't have any trouble so far. (Only one day at 100 degrees!)

Unfortunately after 40 years, the wood is gone.

My grandpa used some of it to make decoupage pictures, and I still have some of those!

By the way, Clayton is right next to Concord to the south. (Used to live near there with my 3 EEs about 20 yrs ago.)
