2 Roos! Booooo! LOL

I did order 6 more Marans from the breeder (last week) and I am picking them up tomorrow. I seriously hope I get some hens in there- these guys aren't cheap! If these guys are roos though man alive are they sweet as ALL get out. Have been from day 1. If not- I gosh I don't know what I'll do lol. I have good odds on my Orps- 3 hens and 1 cockerel it looks like plus I have 3 more Orps coming this with the Marans. Hopefully another gal or 2 in that bunch.

Man how do you guys deal with all the waiting??? With ducks we know in 6 weeks or so what the gender is!

I can sex "most" chicks around 10-12 days. A few are iffy at that point, but it's usually pretty close. I can't say that's true of all breeds. Sometimes I have to resort to looking at their feet/legs.

I guess it's from sexing my frogs (shape of toe pads & angle of back, LOL).

zooweemama............pick BCM's with the smallest combs. Here are mine from a couple years ago for comparison. They are 2 1/2 weeks in the pictures:

Along with the combs, look at the long legs on the one on the left. One of my FBCM cockerels looked like that. The pullets had shorter legs and a bit wider bodies. One of the reasons I asked for pictures was to see if you had pullets or cockerels. I have read about surprise cockeres with marans. Even a surprise pullet. Your two do look like pretty boys. Like your ducks, you will know at 6 weeks. You will see an obvious difference in their combs and the boys should start getting red on their necks and wings.

The good news is that their meat is supposed to be some of the best. It will take a while for them to be ready-around 20 or more weeks.

So far I've processed three cockerels; a campine, a black star & a marans. They were all different sizes of course, but similar ages. The marans by far was the best on the table.
