For cots the ones that have white breasts you have to foam sex, and they have to be adults to do that. Wild colors are breast sexable. But mario is mumbling something about them not foaming, so maybe they have another trick? We are installing the cup waterers in our new breeding pens. I'll let you know how they work once we have them installed and chicken tested! My Bobwhite quail are nuts already and they are only 2 1/2 weeks old. They pop up and out of the brooder almost every time I open the top to replace their food and water. Then it is a game of chase the quail! They are fast little buggers! Can someone tell me how to tell the difference between male and female? All 19 look exactly the same!
Every time I see that picture I miss Louie again. I had an email conversation with someone wanting eggs yesterday. They did not understand why someone would seal or set anything that was not a 7 or above. I was telling them that I am trying to pass on shape temperment, Long life , and talked about the changes in marans eggs during a hens life cycle. Directed them to the sop. They didn't get it. If the egg was not black, I was a bad breeder . While I do enjoy dark eggs, and am thrilled with the early colors this year, I am also thrilled I have hens people can keep as productive girls for years. That are a healthy credit to the marans sop. The conversation made me understand why Walt said he saw such crappy maans in shows that had such bad shape. I have never gotten a bad keel in any of my maras. There is so much to a chicken besides egg color.....Good point here and I hope I did not make it sound like that. I hope to help clarify what I meant with the following. This is one of my Roosters. He was very friendly to people. I sent a trio to Chiqita for Gomez Bantams to get but he was not able to take them. They became Chiqitas. I am very proud to say he gave up his life battling a Mountain Lion! None of his girls were eaten. A good rooster is not one that I have to wear gloves to handle. He will not run at me, fly through the air and try to hit me with his spurs. Roosters like that do not belong at my place. A good rooster to keep will defend the flock, alert to flying predators and feed the girls treats. He will die defending them too but he will not attack people.
