It all depends on how the lavender is made. Is it egg shell color? Chicken die spigots? ( like brown) crazy bloom? I don't know what does it, so I don't know what you might combine ad what you might loose. Egg color is a combination of factors.

Ron was trying to get me in trouble today! But mario seemed interested so I'm excited to hear what happens.
Will that chicken wire hold a lamp up ? If so switch to a milder bulb ( I'd suggest a ceramic if you are going to sleep with that next to you for 5 weeks) and put it on that or clamp it to the wall of the box and put it at an angle. Make sure either of these 2 options are the right temperature. If neither of those work do you have a table you can put over 1/2 your brooder? I pt a hook in the bottom my desk once and hung one of those mondo heat lamps.

I'm having turkey drama. One of the babies got constapated and backed up. His bottom was all swollen and got hurt when. Was trying to get poop out so he did not get septic. Put prep h on his poor bottom I'm hoping his massive swelling goes down so he can poo normally. He is clearly not feeling well however I hope he makes it but not hopeful. The rest of the Gus are doing great.
The bloom causes it with the croad langs

Hi Nor Cal Peeps
I'm Cherina I am in Lodi. I'm a chicken mom grandma really, very accidental. It started with 4 chicks for my daughters and by the end of a few weeks we has 3 Wyandottes, 2 EE, 4 Cochins, 5 seramas and 6 silkies !!! I really hope w e can do this well :) I don't know how this happens, CHICKEN MATH IS REAL!!! So we have 2 broaders in a large dog kenel in my daughters room, we have a small coup but need to figure plans for another largers one and a run... Any suggestions about anything! or suggestions for easy plans would be amazing. Here are some of my grand peep babies

Welcome to the forum and BYC. There is tons of great information here. I don't know how anyone could read it all and still have time to own chickens and have a life,

Jason,

Your current count, 4 OE hatched and the other 2 pipped. They appear to be 3 dark blue and 1 light blue, although the lighting in the incubator isn't great.

There is one Emp hatched and one more pipped so far.

How far will the heat lamp need to be from the sides of the brooder(cardboard box)?
Good morning BCollie,
Speaking for myself only, there are to many variables to say for sure. All you can do is try it out and adapt. A 250 watt bulb is probably to much for a heated space inside.
Could you put a ladder next to the box and secure a rod or board to extend over the top of the box? You could then move it up a rung if it's to hot.

what incubator do you have again? my wafer style Gqf likes to do that.

It is the GQF Genesis 1588. Not sure what "wafer style" means though.

So does that mean potentially it could have stayed like that and killed everyhing in there? When yours does that does it stay that way until you intervene?

May I have some of your Kona coffee this morning please? Soooo tired!

Laura - It is my understanding that chickens don't lay consistently until they're about a year old. My girls have great egg production for a couple weeks and then they get spotty with their eggs for a few days or weeks. Keep checking!

Ali - The same thing happened to me with the temperature spike during hatching. I think the incubator was at 103ish all night before I caught it the next morning and I still had a great hatch. I was so thankful I didn't have to go to work all day when they were hatching.. I would have had such a hard time leaving the house!

I hope everything goes well!! Keep us updated!

Mine is basically the cheap version of yours lol. The wafer is not electronic so I have to turn the dial up and down. I have to intervene with mine daily. It was running great the last few days and this morning it was running 100 to 102 so I turned it down some. I just have to look daily.

Last hatch my incubator hit 104 and all my olive eggers still hatched. I am not sure how long it was that hot though.

There is a place across from Sportsmans warehouse that sells Kona coffee for 3.50 a cup. probably cheaper than driving up here but you are more than welcome to have a cup if you ever wanna come see the chicken set up. Though my Kona supply will not last long lol

Or maybe even longer than that! I have 2 Ameraucanas (BW & Silver) that are 2 years old and have just started laying consistently this year as they approached the 2 year mark! Every bird in my flock went through a hard molt this winter and once they were through that, these 2 AMs began laying. I now have an abundance of small, light blue eggs!
