I hope you said Thank You! Does she eat the eggs from your chickens?

I DID!!! And SHE DOES!!! Actually we are just starting up a flock again since we just purchased the property. The previous owners have lived here since the 70's (summer house) and never landscaped... It's all wild!
That's why the baby gate is the impromptu run for the babies I wanted to get out if the garage!

I was stripping our cloth diapers In The sun behind lol . My city folk family wouldn't believe it thus the picture. Life is great.

I found this really interesting! http://blogs.discovery.com/animal_oddities/2012/10/baboons-with-pet-dogs.html You can skip to about 1:55 if you don't want to see the baboon kidnapping the puppy. It is a short video about how baboons are taking wild dogs and keeping them as pets. It's really neat to see the way animals will work together. I would love to have a donkey or llama that would help protect our chickens!

ETA I heard a huge commotion from the chickens today and peeked out to see a deer standing right by their coop. They were so scared! The deer was just peering around at them like "good gracious, what have I stumbled into?"
A family of monkeys tried to kidnap my friends 2 year old son from a beach in Indonesia. The kidnapping was a group effort. The parents and their son were standing near the shore and a group of monkeys started rummaging through the stuff so they ran to shush them away, and a different group ran in, grabbed their son and started dragging him away. Luckily a bunch of other people from the beach came to the rescue and the monkeys let go of the boy and ran off.

My friend's son is now 25 and has a little monkey of his own (human), so the story ends well, but Monkeys will swipe, kids, cats, purses... you name it.

A few questions:

1) Is play sand ok to use around chickens? I've read somewhere that sand had to be silica free...bit confused as silica free?

2) Our babes are 5-51/2 weeks old. Two though are a little behind on feathering. Our English Oprington looks like a half plucked baby ostrich as she goes through growth spurts and feathering. Can we still move them all into their coop or maybe only out their in the day until the two catch up?

3) When you move the tweens into their new digs do you keep them locked up in the actual coop for a couple days so they understand that's their new home or can you let them enjoy their run as well?

How long have you been waiting?  I'd think 3 days but I don't know.  I ordered some fro AK and they came in 2 days. Did they give you a tracking number?  Sometimes it helps to know where they are in the shipment process.  Also so you can call the post office and pick them up directly if your postal worker has a long route...

What did you order :D ?

Nope, no tracking number. They were supposed to ship last Monday. I messaged her, hoping she forgot to send them. They're Calico Cochins! I won them in the 24 hour auction thread :)

Yes it is!! Some of them are downright vicious though, lol!!
So, when can I start giving my chickies live treats? Mealworms & small crickets?
I don't do it until later. make SURE if you feed them anything but yogurt and chicken feed they have chick grit, they need baby rocks to digest anything else.

I use sand, both types, so far its OK. Don't leave them overnight until they are fully feathered imo.

They are supposed to send a tracking number on that thread, if they don't and you don't get your eggies, PM the mod ( whomever started the thread), and they can help. You can also complain to paypal, but you have some limited time to do that so don't wait too long.
Cooklit is local and has calico cochins if you don't get them.

Stuffing is missing! I'm hoping her nest is just unappealing and she went to find another one. of course, that's not great since I could not find her or it :/.
But its better then if she has been bird napped! She insists on nesting where I park, and since the bulbs have died back, its hot there!

Also, Deanna, that guy I referred= CUSTOMER FROM HELL. 18 emails and now they want me to answer questions about the chicks they bought somewhere else and he volunteered for his boss to come over any wed in an email, when I said I would be home most of wed. These people are fast becoming too annoying to live.

Ah, yes. Welcome to Yreka. Where you have to get your coop inspected.

Keep in mind that when I joined BYC two (three?) years ago, it was to get help changing our code to allow hens. They had been banned since the 80's when *ONE* person allowed their flock to free range. After fighting the city council and planning commission for months, it was finally agreed that the people in town should vote to make a decision. June of 2012, allowing hens in the city was passed by only like, 21 votes. Super close! However, as part of that, there are a lot of restrictions. Not really anything more than any other town, but having your coop checked out to make sure it is within the setbacks is one of the big things. You also have to be zoned either R-1 or R-A (agricultural) in order to be allowed to have them. People in duplexes or in higher density areas can't have them... legally at least. On the plus side the permit and inspection are free.

If you are curious about what else it says, here is the link to the city's hen information page.

So, after all this time, I legally have chickens!

Ah, well now I really hope she just forgot to send them. She was very nice in being willing to wait a few weeks to send (they were supposed to coincide with the eggs I set a few days ago

Best laid plans, eh?) so I'm sure whatever happened it will work out. I was thinking I wanted to breed Calico Cochins, but now that our landlord has gone insane I don't know that I'll be breeding anything. If we get everything worked out, though, I'll definitely look up Cooklit, thanks!

I hope Stuffing shows up soon!

That's weird, because almost everything had a tracking number now days. If you print your own shipping label, they throw in delivery conformation for free. It depends on how she sent them too. I would say 2-4 days would be average.
