They do not need much. A Tablespoon or two each morning should do the trick.

Chickens do not digest milk products. The Pro biotics is what you want them to get from it.

Well, I finally got them to actually eat it instead of run around in it...They won't eat it from a bowl, but when I put it on my finger and stuck my hand in the brooder it turned into a feeding frenzy.

A tablespoon, for how many chicks? I have 16 in there right now.

It isn't really exact. Make sure each of the gest some from our finger and they will be better soon.

Save a chick has a pro biotic too. It comes in packets and is mixed into water for them.

It is fun feeding them the yogurt from your finger though..

That is lovely. My first coop was that same basic design. Although your rockwork is lovely. I didn't need to do that since mine was level and I cut some corners on materials, but this is very pretty and the walk in design is awesome.
Thanks! It would have been SO much easier to build if it were level. Not to mention cheaper. Exciting news! Just had the city come and inspected the coop. Passed and we are officially allowed to have chicks now.

Yes it is!! Some of them are downright vicious though, lol!!
So, when can I start giving my chickies live treats? Mealworms & small crickets?

Hi everyone! It's me BigDaddysMom. I had BYC change my screen name to my farms name HighNDryFarm!
Hey there! Ok I will TRY to remember that HughNDryFarm is you! Love the farm name!

So, I gave my chicks some yogurt...they loved it but go so excited that all I ended up with was a bunch of chicks with yogurt-covered feet

only one of them grasped the concept of "stand by the bowl and eat it"

How much should I let them eat? The one chick that is eating it is just chewing down
BCollie - I take the top off of a jar and fill it with yogurt. Some eat the yogurt and some just step on it. You'll notice that you'll have some chicks eating it off of their brothers/sisters feet! If I have a sick chick I usually dip their beak in the yogurt 3 times a day. I also use Save-A-Chick (both the Probiotic and Electrolyte packets) in their water. It's a good way to make sure all of your chicks get the right vitamins and probiotics. Good luck!

So my daughter said " mom, your such a hillbilly!"
I love it! My parents, brothers and sisters all make fun of me for going from a city type girl to a farmer. They call me a hick all of the time! RUDE!

Wow that's awesome!! Yay for LEGAL chickens! hahaha

Here's the rest of the chick pictures I've edited so far.

It's so hard to tell these two apart, but we finally figured it out - Speckled Sussex #1 has more brown on the fuzz directly above her beak. Speckled Sussex #2 doesn't have as much.

#1

Here, she decided that she wanted to know what was over the edge...She jumped off. I thought for sure she'd be hurt, or dead, since it was waist-high. But nope, she jumped right back up and tried to make a break for it.

And here's #2

I have a bunch of pictures of RIRs, but those haven't been edited yet.

So, I have another question! My brooder is filled with a layer of sand about 2" deep. Before I put in the chicks, though, we covered it with a double layer of paper towels. However after just over 24 hours it's already getting pretty gross. When can I take off the paper towels and let them have just sand? Can I pull back just a corner and see what they do with it? My main concern is that they'll just try to eat sand instead of their food, as it's about the same size..

Congratulations....but why did you have to have the chicken coop inspected? Ag buildings usually don't get inspected. Love the coop btw.

I tried something similiar - I put it in on a very small plate. Only one ate it, the rest just ran through it. I was worried they'd hurt each other when pecking it off their siblings feet. But I found that having them eat off my finger works really well! For the most part, they stay clean(one of them does have yogurt all over her head, though) and almost all of them ate it.
Tomorrow I'll go check out the feed store and see what they have to put in the water! You do Probiotic AND Electrolyte packets, in the same water container?
