I am really sorry this happened. I wish it didn't but it does. Good Luck with everyone else.
Woke up this morning, looked into the brooder. Said "hi girls"...My talking made my foster dog jump up and make a ton of noise in his crate, so all the chickies scattered...except one

My favorite of the two Splash Andalusians. She was acting fine yesterday, viciously attacking my finger for yogurt...I don't know why she died?! Now I'm scared my other chicks are gonna die?!
Help me :( I'm freaking out.

Rest in peace little girly

Your are doing all of the right things!

The cold in shipping damages their organs--three days later some will die from toxins not clearing out. Chicks are birds and they do not show signs of being sick until they are very sick--protects against predators.

It has been three days so you should not lose any more.

In there are a pair of Brown African geese, four each of Silver Appleyard, Welsh Harlequin & Cayugas and six Silky ducks.

Oooh, how cool! I'm jealous. Although not of the amount of poo and soggy bedding you'll be knees deep in. What is a Silky Duck?
We are considering joining 4H for our 11 year old daughter. Is anyone in 4H (or has been) and can tell us if it was a good experience for them?
We are doing 4H with out 6 year old. We may wait until next year, but we called the people and went to one of the meetings. It was really neat! I was in Campfire as a kid and enjoyed it, but I would have loved 4H. We aren't Boy Scout/Girl Scout people either.
My little patient has brought about a change in plans. Tom and I will have been married for 23 years on 5/5 but he is worried about Curly so we are postponing our out of town plans.

Here is a beauty shot...she is damp because I had just given her a drink

Here is the hobble and the shoe. Her balance continues to improve but doesn't it look like she is standing en'pointe?
I think it's wonderful what you're doing for Curly! And what a sweet husband to postpone your plans. Aww. She totally does look like a little Prima Ballerina!

Anyone good with bug bites? Clementine has 20+ mosquito bites all over, but one of them is smaller and has red around it (not like a bullseye, though) I would have thought we would have seen a tick there, although I did just pull a tiny one out of her armpit (I saved the tick and drew a circle around the bite. It was smaller than a flea, not full at all.) Here's a picture, it's the bite on her shoulder. I checked the middle and can't see fang marks. You can see the "normal" mosquito bites down her arm.

So sorry that you lost one. I've had that happen with shipped chicks. One out of the group suddenly sickens and dies within hours while the rest thrive. Now that I have an incubator, I'm not buying shipped chicks. It's eggs or picked up chicks only.

BCollie I hope you are feeling less sad now.

Same for me except I am going for the broody hen method of hatching. I may order from Sandhill at some point because I think I admire their oporation. Also because the sexing process can be really hard on chicks and they only do st. run. We can give the roos happy lives for about 4 months before we process them and sell extra girls.

I keep meaning to tell everyone how wonderful the pictures. But I thin pet rocks pictures made only go broody, so I'm giving her stink eye!

BC, chicks are fragile and shipping is tough on them. It is common to loose them. That being said, are the bottoms still clear? If pasty butt blocks them they get toxic and die. Are they puffed up at all? Are they gasping or having trouble breathing? Are your temps good?

Cocci e coli and pasty butt are the big chick killers you can combat and fix.

Her butt looked fine, not pasty. Since I washed some of their butts that first time, I've been keeping an eye on them, but have not seen any of them get pasty butts again. So that's a good sign, right?
My thermometer says the temp is about 92. It's hard to get more than a 2 second look at it though, because the girls keep burying it in sand. And every time I uncover it they run right back to it, stand on the plastic backing, and pick and scratch at it until it's buried again! When they sleep, they're cuddled together, but when they're awake they are busy running around and trying to fly, scratching in the sand, causing trouble with the thermometer...
My room does get a bit colder at night, should I lower the heat lamp a notch?

Thanks, lets hope that's it. As bad as this sounds I wish it could have been one of the RIRs that I'm not keeping, instead of the pretty splash girl that I was excited to see feather out! We were thinking of keeping her buuut...
