Loving all the baby pics.
After hearing duckling stories and seeing pics, they are so tempting.Plus I have the most awesome cheesecake recipe made with duck eggs! Thankfully, we are not allowed to keep ducks....so my husband won't shoot me for getting more birds....LOL

We are considering joining 4H for our 11 year old daughter. Is anyone in 4H (or has been) and can tell us if it was a good experience for them?

Where are you in Sonoma Co? My 11 yr old started 4H a few months ago. The local club is small, so I became the poultry leader since there wasn't one. Now 4 other kids have decided to do poultry too!! The 4H Chicken Que is this Sunday at the fairgrounds in Santa Rosa. Maybe you can come check it out. We will have a couple of young Seramas to show folks.

:yuckyuck You are giving me the stink eye???!!!! I am totally innocent! You are the one with crazy broodies!!!
Our free exotic chick is straight run, we are hoping that it turns out to be a she...I would hate to have to give it away! Although I don't think I'd have too much trouble finding a pet home for a Silver Polish, they're really cool looking. I told my self I wasn't going to have a favorite...But this little Blue Andalusian of mine is so friendly, I can't help but love her more than all the others

Have never heard of the extra chicks being girls.. Don't get too attached! Patrick I'm going to go get a picture of what you did!!! Infecting my hatchery chickens!!

Oh my gosh what she said didn't click until you commented. rofl!
I have a strange sense of humor. Many people just give me a blank look! lol I am used to it now.

Yeah I have a little whitish yellow one with a tiny black dot on her head. It seems really sweet, but I am trying really hard not to have a favorite.

Really? We are in Santa Rosa. We usually go to the Chicen Que, but can't make it this year, as we have other plans.
I would love more info!

I am getting Langshan hatching eggs from a breeder in AZ. His blacks won top honors at the Stockton show. He has been doing some test hatches and hasn't been happy with the fertility. He has some of his older roos in the breeding pens and the fertility is only about 75%. Because of the lower fertility, he is sending me eggs for only the cost of shipping!!!

Wow that is awesome!! You are a hatching queen!

Glad mine wasn't the only one stinking. You know 26 is a LOT when you look at them all together. I am not sure what to do with all of them until I see which ones are boys.....
Same here. My boyfriend Johnny keeps saying out of our 21 we have a ton of boys.. I'm still thinking positive!

Woke up this morning, looked into the brooder. Said "hi girls"...My talking made my foster dog jump up and make a ton of noise in his crate, so all the chickies scattered...except one

My favorite of the two Splash Andalusians. She was acting fine yesterday, viciously attacking my finger for yogurt...I don't know why she died?! Now I'm scared my other chicks are gonna die?!
Help me :( I'm freaking out.

Rest in peace little girly

Oh no I'm so sorry to hear that! It sounds like people think it's from shipping. Just make sure she wasn't puffed up at all because that's a sign of Cocci (which is really easy to medicate for).

Anyone good with bug bites? Clementine has 20+ mosquito bites all over, but one of them is smaller and has red around it (not like a bullseye, though) I would have thought we would have seen a tick there, although I did just pull a tiny one out of her armpit (I saved the tick and drew a circle around the bite. It was smaller than a flea, not full at all.) Here's a picture, it's the bite on her shoulder. I checked the middle and can't see fang marks. You can see the "normal" mosquito bites down her arm.

It may just be the picture but it does look like there is a bullseye pattern on that top bite. Keep an eye on it and if the bullseye gets anymore clear you should take her to the doctor asap. I just learned about this in vet school!
I get really bad bug bites like that too. There can be hundreds of spiders and mosquitos around and I'm always the only one to get attacked badly. It must be because I'm so sweet!

Sincerely,
Tiny Chicken Secretary
Such a cute picture!! I'd be scared my guys would poop all over my laptop.. they seem to save all of their poo until they're being held or they're on something I hope they don't poop on! haha Silly chickens

Betty is the healthiest broody I swear. She leaves her nest to eat and drink, sometimes dirt bathe and comes back. Usually twice a day. She is however incredibly cranky. She is chasing all the other chickens away from her- even when she is out of her nest. Although she yells at us she lets us pet her though. I love her. :) Yay for broodies! I hope to pick up some eggs from Jeff to slip under her- possibly today. I am culling Gary today. I'm very sad but it is necessary. RIP Garebear. :( Hubby is going to bury him in our little pet cemetery. I hate being the only who has to do these things. No one is else is 'capable'. :( At least I have some Betty/Gary babies from their wild love affair. Funny thing about them? She would never let anyone else mate her. Not the top roo, not ANY other roo. She beat them all up- only Gary. Silly hen.
Awww poor Gary! It is so cute that you have a pet cemetery! The 9 year old I nanny from always asks me what I will do with all of my animals when they die. I don't have the heart to tell her they go in the trash. If we owned our own property I would definitely have a little area for our "gone to soon" babies.

Tick bites are generally more red. She could be scratching that one, which would make it more inflamed.

If it starts looking more like a bullseye target, then I'd take her to the Doctor:

Just got back from Brentwood. I had to take a math final... totally bombed it but that's ok because I still got a B in the class! Woohoo!

I need advice on an egg eater. There is a sneaky little egg eater in my Basque pen. It can't be the two girls that went broody (I originally thought it was them) because there were eaten eggs at the ranch when those girls were home with me. Should I just take one hen away at a time to see who it is? Is there a way to fix this nasty little issue? Whoever it is is eating all of my eggs and we hoped to start selling their hatching eggs sometime in the next month. Help!

I think if I ever want chicks again, I will put eggs under a broody hen! I just didn't have a choice this time, as shipping was the only way to get all the breeds I wanted!(I am extremely picky)

Oh my gosh I could never do that. I mean I have nothing against people raising animals for meat, it's 110% better than store-bought meat...but geez, I almost started crying when this little 5? day old chick died! I wouldn't be able to eat a bird I raised for 4 months, I'd probably see it then run to my room and start bawling my eyes out lol
Buuut I don't eat meat anyways, so it doesn't matter :)

I was raised as a farm girl by a farm girl so I have grown up eating what we raised. But I understand your POV too. I haven't done the processing myself. Still squeamish about it but I know a lot of people here do.

Way to spot the hyocracy! I had to laugh!
Iguess what I am saying is that I just want them to have a happy life right up till the end and OK I know you are teasing me but why do I feel the need to stammer out an apology???

I don't know how to tell if they're puffed up...this is my first time with chicks..I do have a dead-chick picture(sent to my mom who's out of town) but I don't think anyone wants that posted here.

A question...I got 1 black Andalusian (along with the 2 splash and 1 blue) and I'm wondering if she will grow up to be all black? Because a few of her wing feathers are white?
