Marcus is a BYC member (renardsubtil) and we had a Langshan talk this morning! From what I understand, he is looking for started pullets that are close to POL. I won't have any available until fall and that's if the eggs in my incubator hatch and we get our breeding program up and running.

evreyone is LOOKING for starter pullets, but since you cant get them, they will usualy take chicks at some point :D.

home from work and coming down with a cold, nice timing right at the end of the semester! and i was feeling quite worried about the little scalped chick, but it is still eating and pecking around their enclosure, seems utterly unbothered by its wound -- so strange! i had been thinking, if it was suffering, that i should euthanize it, but now will wait a little longer to see how it does. i can't see how it will ever have feathers on its head, though!

oh and i got Frances and her six chicks moved to an enclosure in the main run, so they are out of the nesting boxes & have easy access to food and water and sunshine in the morning. relieved that they have settled in to their new spot!

So.... I had 2 of the 3 BLRW chicks hatch. One yesterday evening, and one this afternoon. The third pipped yesterday, and I was keeping an eye on it, but some time last night it flipped it's self around in the shell and drowned.

When I saw it this morning I tried to help, but it was too late. That was the one with the worst air cell. It was really high on one side, and dipped down past the middle on the other. At least I have the two. #1 was much happier when #2 arrived.

I am annoyed with myself. I finally decided to order 3 sexed female Toulouse goslings to raise up for my two ganders, but I waited too long. NONE of these hatcheries, Metzer Farms, Ideal Poultry, Murray McMurray, some others, have any. I had one "shopping cart" set up last night and this morning I couldn't complete the transaction because "the item" was sold out. Everybody.

I considered - briefly - Embden goslings, but either they are sold out or I must get a male with two females, and no singles sold.

Crud. I will have to order them earlier next year. The boys will be almost 3 years old by then...

Oh no!

How do the rest of them look? Hopefully the others won't be affected. How many are growing?
the ones I candled look good.
My Daughters found a project--Someone put up a You Tube video with instructions for making Stargate SG1 Worm hole cookies. Of course we had to make them.

To be authentic, Blue Jolly Ranchers are used but we did not want to be limited to blue.

To make, use Butter cookie or sugar cookie dough--either home made or store bought.

Use a big cutter for the outer ring and a smaller one for the center.

Crush the jolly rancher candies--we used double sandwich bags and the flat part of a meat tenderizer. Use a cookie sheet with parchment paper--fill the hole with the cracked candy and bake at 350 for around 12 min. Depending on the cookie recipe and oven, the time could be shorter or longer.

Very fun project!
I love those yummy
