California - Northern

One of our chickens, Howl (a Black Japanese Bantam), who is nicknamed Ninja, has been spending her nights somewhere other than the coop. I caught her before dusk and shut her in last night, but two nights before I couldn't find her and same with tonight. But tonight our sweet little Tuck seems to have followed her.

He's one of my favorites - sweet little Quail Antwerp roo. I sure hope he shows up tomorrow morning. Those two are buddies with my very favorite, our bantam frizzle, Lefty. Lefty will be so sad if they don't come back! He looked so lonely huddling by himself in the corner of the coop. Also, it's my birthday. I don't think anyone told those rascal chickens.
Happy Birthday!!!!

Good Morning,

My little Ameracuana hen is broody, and I would like to give her some eggs to brood and hatch. I am interested in Ameracuana eggs. If you have any fertile Ameracuana eggs for sale, would you please PM. me.
I live in Sonoma county and am hoping to find eggs within reasonable driving distance.

Thank you,
Lual

Welcome aboard! I only know of people in Santa Cruz county with lavender AM's. Hopefully someone local will respond.
(Semi blue humor incoming)
It is raining here today! I told mario I was going to make some holes in the bare lawn for this grass we grew from seed inside.
He said grassholes!

When you are done, it will say gracias!

We are going to the tiberon wine festival this weekend, I'm excited. I always forget to buy tickets in time.

I have 2 girls who are 20 weeks, 2 who are 16-18 weeks and then 2 that are 9 and 12 weeks that have to be on grower food.

Here is my problem......none of them like the crumbles....they fish out the large chunks and leave everything else. The food they are on is very powdery.. I cannot find a grower (that meets my organic, soy free standards) that is in a pellet. I don't want the young girls to have the calcium of a layer, and they really need the protein of a grower........
I would really like to try the Freedom layer. It's calcium content is 3-3.5 percent......but it's protein is only 16%.......

What are my options? We are down to a quarter bag of our current grower.....and I need to decide.
Do I need to feed separately? I really don't want to buy another bag of the starter, knowing we won't finish it.....and half of what is used will go to waste.....since it is so powdery.

Hello,

Yes, they carry freedom. The feed store calls it the natural lay pellet, but the label says Freedom. They also have the Freedom Chick starter but I bought the last 4 bags today. Sorry. The prices were higher today. They Freedom is now 21.99 from $19.99. Darn, will the feed prices ever stabilize? Every time I go to the store there is a price increase. Urg...

I have to meet Shantih in Novato on Friday, so I think I will swing by and pick up a bag. I am paying $26 for a 50# bag of the Modesto Mills organic soy free starter/grower . So $21.99 sounds great to me. We will need it in the next few months even if I am not feeding it now,

If you add a little water to the powder will they eat it? I wouldn't do too much at a time because leftovers might go bad, but my girls always loved wet crumbles.

It is raining here, too! I had to run around the yard in my nightgown picking up the tools, wood, etc. that DH left out after working on my quail/brooder pen. I knew that I should have picked it up earlier in the week but he is working on it again this weekend so thought it would be okay to leave the stuff out.

Have fun at the wine festival! We are going to the Oakland Greek Festival this weekend. My DIL is Greek and she asks us to go with them every year. The timing finally works this year! I've been on a strict food intolerance diet for over 3 weeks now and I'm looking forward to the wonderful Greek food that they have there!

Holy smokes!
And, how do you handle the dust? I have 2 brooders in my spare room along with a coating of dust on everything! I've been thinking about getting an air purifier with a HEPA filter.

You could try fermenting too. If you want to try it it helps tons with wasteful chickens. And they like it. And it makes your soy like tofu so it back to an OK product if you are on a budget. I can bring up a pair of buckets and some of my started water if you like for Friday.

Have you tried feeding them fermented feed? It is a good way to use the powdery end of the bag crumbles as well as regular crumbles & pellets. I feed all of my chickens both dry and fermented. I know that Shantih feeds her chooks fermented feed, also.

HAH! You beat me, Shantih! Younger, faster fingers, I guess!
