I posted a new thread about my white mystery egg... Though I'd ask ya'll too since not many replies have come there...

Here's the scoop:
I have 9 laying hens, 2 that over 3 y.o. & 7 that are aprox. 8 months old
There are 4 BRs, 4 RIRs, & 1 Ameracauna...

I've only got blue & brown eggs ever... until yesterday! Now, 2 days in a row, I've gotten a pure white egg! What is going on???

Hi Wasabi,

It's white, so probably not the EE. My guess is one of the older layers lost the color coat for the eggs.

Blue eggs are colored in the shell. Brown eggs are white shells with a brown coat.. Green eggs are blue shells with a brown coat.

That's a nice looking egg.

. It's great that yours are still going for so long. I am encouraged.

Gosh, this thread is more active than I've ever seen it.

AmyBeth, I hope that you find out what is wrong with your chicks. They looked normal in the video, maybe just hot.
A couple of my Delaware chicks hatched out with curly wing feathers like that other chick. I think they got crimped in the egg. Once they got their next set of feathers, they were straight. I didn't band them at that point, so am not sure about this... a couple of birds in this group ended up having split wing. So, I wonder if the curly feather chicks were the same ones that had split wing.

Ron, Woohoo on your BYC Spirit Award! You certainly deserve it for always trying to help everyone.

Welcome! Looks like you have some good dogs.

Wasabi, I've had EE eggs that changed a bit from blueish to greenish, and brown egg layers whose eggs faded over time (normal), but that is one very bright white egg. Ron is probably right about the cause.

Jersey, looks like you have a knack for choosing just the right name to match your chicks.

Ron,

I forgot to ask- where do you buy the King Feed? How many types do they have?

Kim
Hi Kim,

Western Pet and Feed in Carmichael. It's a bit far, so I bought 4 bags to cover fuel costs and still save some money. I guess it is about as far as Vacaville, so I really do come out ahead over the Cascade feed.

They carry the Soy Free and Natural Poultry feed for sure. They probably carry the Organic with Soy but I did not check on that line. The Soy free is: Layer crumble, Layer Pellets and starter\grower crumbles. They also have the Natural line that has Soy. The Natural is just over $20.00 and the Soy Free is $23.50 for 5# bags.

There are three other Western Pet and Feed stores in The Sacramento area and their website lists another one opening in Roseville soon. The King Feed Rep I talked to said one is opening later this summer in Davis. The Store in downtown Sacramento is closest to me, so I called to see if they had King Feed yet. Gotta keep the pressure on. The worker that helped me yesterday said they were probably going to stop carrying Purina and just sell the King Feed. It seems like their customers are happy with it so far.

I will keep you posted!

What beautiful chicks!! Buff Orp chicks are cute but I admit rather one dimensional because they are just solid butter cream color lol. These are so darn cute- wonder what they are going to look like all grown??

I'll look up split wing. I am afraid I am rather ignorant on chicken wing issues. It's very pronounced and it IS the wing not the feathers. The end bones of the wing do not fold UNDER the big wing bone (I probably sound stupid since I don't know the terms). So my concern is- if it's something that could be genetically passed down should I cull it? (oh my gosh I hate thinking that but I don't want physically defective off spring) I suspect it's a hen too so that would double suck culling her.
