California - Northern

1 RIR, 2 Barred Plymouth Rocks, 2 Buff somethings ( The feedstore thought Buff was a breed.. But they seem like orps) and 2 yellow chicks that are starting to look like Leghorns ( the feed store told me they were something WAY off haha) They are so much fun!

HI! I'm new to this site, and felt that the Northern California forum would be a great place to meet other Californians. I just started out raising my own chickens but I've been a poultry enthusiast ever since I took a poultry production course at Fresno State! I'm so happy to have found a site with so much information and full of others who share a similar passion!

Hi Laura! I'm Lynda. Welcome to BYC!! I have learned so much from just this thread, even though I don't often have much useful to add.

Everyone is so friendly and helpful. You will find a lot of support here. Hope to hear about more about your chicks.

ZooWeeMama, don't ever worry about about asking for help! I'd be doing the same if I were in your shoes. Even though I have lots of childhood experience with chickens, it was a loooong time ago, and there is so much I don't know, I am learning right along with you. I saw the open mouths and neck stretching in your video (especially the BO). This does not look normal to me, but they do look quite alert and strong. Wish I knew something to help you. I don't think it will hurt them to try some treatment, but remember, antibiotics will not have any impact on a virus (although it will help secondary bacterial infections that often occur in conjunction with viral infections.) I think there is probably a lot of truth to Ron's 3 day rule, because they pretty much have to fight the viruses on their own. Natural remedies sound good because I think they often contain extra beneficial nutrients that support good health in general. Hope things get better soon!

Ron, CONGRATULATIONS!

A very fitting acknowledgement for all the support and caring you offer everyone on BYC! We and our feathered friends all benefit because of you.

Welcome!!!
This is an incredible site! (I think its safe to say we are all addicted to chickens here so have fun!)
I have learned soooo much from the people here; lots of knowledge, different tricks of the trade & this is a great forum...
What are you raising & why, may I ask??

I have 1 RIR 2 Barred rocks, 2 Buff chicks (thinking they might be orps) and two seemingly leghorn looking chicks. I've been having to work the most with them because they seem to be very flighty and when we got them they were maybe 4 or 5 days old so I was already behind on socializing them! But, they are getting better everyday!

OH And:

CONGRATS RON! That is so cool!
Ditto on what Wings said: I know I have personally (my birds really) been helped multiple times by ur caring & experienced advice...
We are all lucky to have someone like you on BYC

I feed my chicks Flock raiser until month 5-6.

(They're 3 weeks old right now

)
Who is 3 weeks old? My chickens? I have 2 batches. Batch 1 (with the sick chicks) = 4 weeks old. Batch 2 (with the curly winged chick) = 2 weeks old. My Start&Grow has 18% protein. My Flock Raiser has 20%. So the Flock Raiser is higher than protein- so if my 2 week old chick has angel wing then flock raiser would be bad for her.
