California - Northern

Glad to hear that you have a health food store near, Zoo!
Which is it, may I ask?

I mostly make my own medicine but have to rely on store bought goldenseal sometimes: The goldenseal/echinacea tincture I buy for about $10 is made by Herbpharm in OR.
(Great ppl, top notch facility & incredible farms!) **Goldenseal is an endangered species so always buy from a reliable, organic & sustainable supplier!

Like I said, you should see results in 2-3 days. Never use goldenseal for more than 5 days, (can repeat after a break of 3 days) because it is a real antibiotic.
The same rule applies for echinacea but for a different reason: you build up an immunity & the effects become non affective after 5 days.

Anyways, if anything, this is the first thing I turn to & have never had to really figure out what was wrong w/ ppl, dogs, birds, goats, & a bearded dragon, because the problem is usually resolved within a day or two.
FYI: I also use Bach's Rescue Remedy (Flower essence) religiously for all trauma; a great one for the caretaker as well

The dewormer is a "goo ball" that I make w/ wormwood & black walnut & some other stuff... it will be for sale soon!

Slippery Elm Gruel: (Something everyone should know about because a human can survive on this indefinitely & may sometimes be the only thing one will "keep down")
Find a slippery elm powder (in bulk herbs section of a good health food store, or grind lozenges if raw bark cannot be found)
Add a tablespoon to enough boiled water to form a sticky paste (about 4 T)
Offer to patient... leave available to them for a day or so, make fresh (every 3 days) if they are into it.
*Add water if needed to gruel for desired consistency. *Sometimes its better to water it down if the patient isn't excited about a thick gruel.

Hope that can be of help to someone & your little guys/girls are fine soon!
The video looked to me like they are still doing great

Hi Zooweemama,

Another thing to remember is the three day rule. If they are not getting worse and or are getting better after 3 days they will usually get better. If at the same time they are eating, drinking and pooing it's even more likely.

The three day rule works for people too. Take em to the Doctor if they are getting worse after three days(people--vets for chickens are very expensive so that really is a personal decision).

It sounds like the Gape worm test was negative, so try the natural anti biotics maybe. Do you know how much to give them? They are very small.

I hope the get better soon.

all went well with the chicks being reintroduced today. my little icelandic was kicking up dirt and scratching around like she never left. The legbar x welsummer/penedesenca rooster was getting picked on a bit by the Crele Penedesenca rooster but

what can you do. I am getting rid of the legbar x welsummer/pene rooster chicks anyway. Have 2 maybe 3 if anyone wants them FREE

That's what I thought too. But I kept coming across so many people saying chickens don't really get angel wing. I am feeding them chick starter- the Purina Start&Grow. The first batch of chicks had that until 3 weeks old and I moved them to Flock Raiser. At 2 weeks old does chick starter have too much protein in it for them? I do not feed them table scraps- occasionally I offer them chopped kale (which is not a protein) but no eggs or milk or snacks yet. Maybe it is angel wing...it's just soooo odd?
I feed my chicks Flock raiser until month 5-6.

(They're 3 weeks old right now

HI! I'm new to this site, and felt that the Northern California forum would be a great place to meet other Californians. I just started out raising my own chickens but I've been a poultry enthusiast ever since I took a poultry production course at Fresno State! I'm so happy to have found a site with so much information and full of others who share a similar passion!

welcome to the thread..

Ok I hope it did correctly. I took qtips and swabbed their throats. I am not sure how 'far' you are supposed to swap though. I swabbed my Marans first- his swap came back with a little food debris. Nothing red.

I swabbed my Orp next (he is the one that has been the worse off) and he was breathing with a noticeable crackle. I swabbed him and each time I pulled back the swab and it was clean but extremely damp- maybe mucous? I really stressed him out. What I am just unsure of is if I swabbed far enough back. I went past the first part of his tongue. I also have to note his breath wasn't so hot. Smelled bad- like stinky dog breath?

Hmmm, another person on the Neveda? thread had this smelly breath issue as well as the other symptoms you've mentioned. My concern to move on treating soon is, and maybe I read incorrectly, but don't you now have 3 with symptoms? If you can treat with Wasabichick's recipe that would be great. Oh, and her chickens recovered after antibiotics, so that's good news.
