Channel 40 predicts temps will reach 110 for us on Saturday!

Forecast here for Sat. is 112. It was 101 yesterday. Chickens were doing ok. Some were breathing with their beaks open, but not panting hard. Others looked normal. Most of my Dorkings do excellent in the heat. Ron, your birds seemed ok. Sometimes they would open their beaks to breathe but didn't look in distress. Both breeds seem to be handling it about the same. I have a feed pan of water in the pen for them. I could hose down inside there if you would like. There is hay/straw on top of sand. So I don't know about risk of mold. It's up to you what I do with those birds. Let me know. I've been dumping the water inside the pens with my birds. They enjoy scratching away the straw to get down to the wet sand.

My pigs are miserable, even with shade and mud. They seem to be suffering more than the chickens in this heat.

I think the Orangevale swap is this Saturday. I was planning to go but worry about leaving critters when the forecast is so extreme.

Oh update on ugly boys new family. I heard today he is settled in well and happy.

He learned to roost!!! The hens are still getting used to him but they love him.

So good to find a good rooster home for the special ones.

Those little smooth feathers nekkid necked boys are very popular if you can get someone to take them. They like people and start a lot of conversations!

That is great news!

The Crele Penes are Ultra heat hardy but I do not know about the Blue Egg Layers. The Pullets seem fine here. The water on Friday and Saturday would be a good idea.

I am very pleased with the Blue Egg Layers--I want to move to them to get a breed that is more heat hardy than the Marans. So far so good!

I may be taking an RIR in for necropsy though...They may not be used to the heat here. One of them is fine so Heat culling I guess.

I thought those were EOs. So, you want me to hose down the bedding, even though there is straw in there? Sorry about your RIR.

Hosing should be fine for the hot days--It should dry off quickly with the sand there.

The two Gray Cockerels are Blue Egg Layers from the UofA, or Whiting Blues. At home I have 3 Splash and two Blue pullets. They are Arcaucana crossed with Leghorns--both should be heat hardy.

I have a splash pullet for you. This is an older picture so they are a bit bigger:

The ups and downs of the weather have been freaky. I hope everyone's birds are doing well.
