Molly,

I've bought from these people before.  Less than fifty cents a piece with free shipping.  They frequently have misprints for around 25 cents each.  Misprint like the ink is blurred, or large egg carton that reads medium, etc.  They get your cartons out to you fast!

I also had another source years ago when I was raising crickets and was buying egg flats.  They were even cheaper, but for the life of me I can't remember their name.

Thanks Deb :)

Ohhhhhhh now I get it. Earhart!!!!! Sometimes I am not too quick on the uptake!!

yes! the first Amelia was by far the earliest (and best) flier of my little chicks, i'd always find her perched on the edge of the brooder while the others were still squabbling inside -- and the subsequent Amelias have lived up to the name, too. One flew up into one my giant oaks last week, and Max was very annoyed that he was too heavy to follow her, she'd gone too high -- but she adores him (both of the Amelias + Lucy are huge Max fans, stay close to him whenever possible), so she came back down.

I got a first egg from a White Leghorn pullet today. At least I think that's who it was from. I don't have any white layers right now, and I don't think it was one of the Cornish-x because they are too fat to get into those nesting boxes. It's pretty big and pretty for a first egg though...

I want a white Leghorn too. Just one.

woo hoo! I can't wait til my girls start laying! Is there a way to help "grow up" a group of 13 week olds? Maybe have them watch 'old yeller'? It sure aged me a bit at the end. .... Congrats on the beautiful egg!
Funny but that book/movie will stick with you won't it? Traumatic for sure.

When I was a kid, dad used to always play the radio in the barn when we were milking cows. They (the cows) became real music snobs. They hated country, thought classical was "meh", and loved rock. Go figure.

spotted skunk?? you mean there's yet another predator to watch out for? sheesh. And I was just getting used to the foxcoyotebobcatlionbearraccoonskunksnakepossumweasel blend we have here.

foxcoyotebobcatlionbearraccoonskunksnakepossumweasel That sort of reminds me of a George Carlin line.....

Yup. Add spotted skunk to the list. Pshaw.

I think they are sort of pretty but I don't like their side effects.

or read them Judy Bloom books. That very first egg is exciting! My first to lay was my Red Star Vivian. She lays a large to JUMBO egg nearly every day serioulsy she maybe has skipped 3 or 4 sdays since she started.
And THAT is why I want a Red Star! That and my last one was super nice.

Never heard of the spotted skunk. It looks strange.

Ron - my wellie/ameraucana hens lay a green egg like those on the right. They are both fantastic layers.

lizanne - congrats on the new egg!

Some drama and excitement last night. First, the excitement: My Icelandic broody hatched out 2 olive eggers (a blue and a splash), a welsummer and a barnevelder. 2 eggs still left under her, but I'm not sure if they are going to do anything - need to candle them later. Now the drama: my dog and I treed a bunch of raccoons last night. I went out to do my usual chicken nightly routine of closing windows, counting heads, etc and heard strange noises and something scampering through the oak leaves. My dog went nuts, she was running from tree to tree and tracking their scent. I shined a flashlight in the trees and saw their beady little eyes looking back at me. Hopefully they got the message that they are not welcome here.
Soooo, I got an email the other day advertising "Predator Pee", and this other stuff here.

Any one tried it?

Lol you and me both sister! I couldn't figure that one out until they just now drew me a picture!

ok, I'm doing this without quotes1
Preditor pee did not work for me on deer. Most of the time they stay out of my yard now becuse they don't like all the chicken noise and its a pain to get IN my yard from the front ( but they can do it) If they chickens are all asleep under the bushes the deer will come in and try and take out my plants. I'm trying to train Cranberries to gobble at them, but he is unimpressed at deer. People, cars, birds, stray leaves, all of these things make him complain but deer? whatever.

As for names , I usualy sit with my birds for a while till they have a personality and then they get named. Stuffing and cranberries were originaly supposed to be dinner, i didn't intend to have turkey pets . Catalina has a very world weary eye, and is named after a character in The Masters of Rome books by Collen Mccullough ( ok, a LOT of my chickens and other animals are named after these guys. Mrs McCullough can REALLY draw a character and its easy to pick a fit) She lived up to her name by taking over the coop and becoming head hen ( Catalina failed to take over rome, but, hey its the thought that counts) I love to yell " the conspiracy of CATALINA at her" she thinks thats the name for black solider flies.

Pandcake got named when she flatted out trying to sit on a thousand eggs. bubbah the quail was huge and ornery and wiggled when she walked. Vonnie is named after my mother nick name. MY great Aunt rose used to call her that. By the time I came around, she used to have to go through a litany of names to get to me, and she always started with vonnie. I used to feel JUST like vonnie acted like a crazy jumpy chicken when I waited for her to finish those darn names and get to me!
Plank used to sleep like she was dead, but Mario changed it to planks constant and named her roost mate ( the rooster who didn't crow till after he was romancing all the girls) Constance so they were a pair.

I Moved around a lot as a little girl and used to have to pare down my belongings to a suitcase frequently. So I have a lot of memories and I like to use them as touchstones. Using a name to tie memories to has always made things more special for me.

Mind you I don't name every chicken, and some don't get named until they name themselves, so to speak.

Thank being said, what do your 2 girls remind you of?

Thanks, yes. I've always loved to cook. In the middle of fair baking, we were eating pretty simply (grilled cheese, etc), but did manage to make a homemade pizza one night. I figured, what's one more yeast dough, LOL I love to experiment and develop new recipes. With cooking you can really tweak things a lot. Baking is a bit more scientific, you can vary flavors but there is a basic formula (recipe) you can't deviate from too much without affecting the outcome adversely.

I was always the one trying to see just how fancy of a meal I could prepare while tent camping with my son. Steamed fresh caught crab, homemade ice cream in the campsite with berries we collected, etc. When DH and I go on vacation, we stay in a condo and I still cook more meals than we eat out. We travel to Mexico every year and I always bring baking ingredients in my suitcase, LOL. The timeshare salesmen leave me alone in the supermarket, I don't look like a tourist. The American tourists are buying beer & tequila, I'm buying 5# sacks of flour, oil, potatoes, fresh veggies, etc.

I have entered a few cooking contests too. I've made it past the first round in a few original chicken recipe contests, never made it to the cook off round. I have won chili cook-offs about a half dozen times though

My DH always requests a big pot of chili that he doesn't have to share with anyone every year for his birthday.

Inspired by the Amelias I Googled "Famous Female Pilots" and after reading the list have settled on either Sally or Bessie or Willa. Then I thought of Krista McAuliffe and threw that into the mix as well.

Any votes?

Ali I always thought were similarly minded

Still working on a name for the SGD...don't know that a famous aviator will do for her

When I was 13 I won the Apple Pie Baking contest at the Mendocino County Fair in Boonville. That is my claim to culinary fame. I do like to cook and like you I experiment. I have brought my man round to more adventurous eating. He was your basic cooked meat kind of guy I make a darned good chili too but I embarrassed to tell you how simple and quick it is.

I think I have to give the SGD time to "name herself" but the OE is definitely a flighty little thing so I am going with an aviator name. You really write well and I can picture your stories vividly and your birds as well :) I am inspired by Constance and Comment so much that If I have a SGD roo maybe I will name him Earl Grey.

Silver Grey Dorkings fly fairly well too.

This is an SG Dorking, Corwin in my plumb tree.

I'd vote Willa................I just like it. Sounds like a chicken name.

And the Dorking..................maybe a bit irreverent, but stretch the Dorking to dorky and go with comediennes. I vote for Gilda (as in Radner). I still get sad when I think about her death. (And she took my man...........I had a thing for Gene Wilder
