California - Northern

I think Dusty is very pretty.

Even prettier is this beautiful shot.

Soooo, I got an email the other day advertising "Predator Pee", and this other stuff here.

http://www.mypetchicken.com/catalog/Chicken-Supplies/Wolf-Pee-Repels-Coyotes-Deer-Foxes-More-p1360.

Any one tried it?

A friend of ours, that is a landscaper, put mountain lion urine on his plants to repel the deer. Now he has a cougar on his property on a regular basis and his pets are disappearing one by one.

Then later the dogs freaked out because my DH when to the store (without them), and they broke through the fence. Now they are missing. We've called the shelters, and posted on craigslist, and haven't heard anything.

Post fliers everywhere with an undisclosed reward amount. Go to the shelter and look, to make sure. People who answer the phone don't always know what's been picked up. Hope you find them!

Lake County California. I call that the gateway to the northern Cal, myself.

here's another broody/chick management question for everyone -- my current adult flock in my original coop/run is 12 birds (11 girls + max), and now i have my two new pens, one of which is occupied by the been-here-for-a-week campines, who are 3-4 months old but small sized -- the other pen is empty.

currently the original coop has not only the 12 adults but 11 chicks, of varying ages from 7.5 weeks to 3. they are all okay in there together for now, especially since they spend a lot of time out free-ranging, but soon, as the chicks get bigger, it's going to be way too crowded.

so what's the best way to divide them up? all the chicks into the empty pen, once they're all feathered enough to not need mom? or move the two broodies who are still acting mom-like in with them? or put the chicks in with the campines (again, once they're feathered out enough -- they are all close except maybe the 3-week-old marans), to see how they all get along, and keep one pen free?

i suppose one thing i should do is check to see if any of the broodies are still sleeping with the chicks vs. back to roosting -- will do that tonight -- but any other suggestions in the meantime?

i posted this long question this morning, and am afraid it might have gotten lost -- re-posting, just in case anyone has any suggestions for how to divide my growing flock up!

If I could upload photos, I have a couple of strange "muttly" looking birds too. I have a LF blue cochin living in my tolbunt pen and decided to hatch a couple of her eggs to see what I'd get. They are dark, have a somewhat of a crest look and feathered legs. Odd looking birds. I need to go look and see if they are boys or girls.

I also got my first OE project chicks. BCM over a blue splash araucana

girls!

Oh! I'm excited to see pics of those when the uploader or whatever is fixed! I'm so excited about our OE's! They are Blue or splash maran hen X blue Isbar rooster.

I would integrate them the same way you integrate shipped and regular chicks. I think the chicks will stay with Mom for 4 weeks or so and then they will need to be separated from the big ones until they can fight on their own. These will probably be fine.

Growing up, which would be 40 years ago, we had a broody hatch some chicks out in the orchard. When they were big enough we moved them in with the big girls and they were fine.

Sucks you can't have roosters :( Our Ameraucana roo hasn't crowed at all yet, our Blue OE roo (at least that's what I think he is) has a really cute crow and is the one who has pretty much gotten it down, and our splash OE roo needs to really practice more.
I know! I love Roosters.
They're going good Ron! Thank you for asking! I'm looking for a part time job at a vets office right now!
Can't wait! :-)

I hope you find a job soon!
