I would integrate them the same way you integrate shipped and regular chicks. I think the chicks will stay with Mom for 4 weeks or so and then they will need to be separated from the big ones until they can fight on their own. These will probably be fine.

Growing up, which would be 40 years ago, we had a broody hatch some chicks out in the orchard. When they were big enough we moved them in with the big girls and they were fine.

thanks! i AM noticing that the big girls are giving the chicks a bit more trouble now that they are more independent of their moms -- so splitting the chicks off into the "grow-out pen" (the empty one) is probably what i'll do -- but i might see how they interact with the campines, once i let them out to free-range -- they are very different in age but likely will be similar in size (Max Jr, at nearly 8 weeks, is almost as big as they are! and it looking like he might be female after all, which is interesting) -- it would be convenient if they could all share a coop for now!

or maybe not -- perhaps i should just keep the campines separate, as i have a feeling i might be wanting to get more of those from Deb... arghh, i can see how suddenly one ends up with 20 pens!

I still have those Safeway chicks, they should be some kind of Leghorn cross. I have 3 that look like boys, and 3 that I think are girls. You can have one or two if you want. I have a lot of chicks right now, and at some point I need to pick and choose who will stay, and who will go.

:) I would actually be interested in Safeway chicks, but I just have to hold on and do only one more hatch this year. I want to integrate all at the same time.

Are they the brown egg layers? I am looking for that lovely big white egg.
I'm having a rough day (and last night). The one egg set to hatch yesterday finally pipped last night. In the very middle of the egg, under the air cell. It looked weird, so I took it out to double check and it had liquid around the pip. I dried the area the best I could, but I could tell it had liquid it it's mouth. I took a paper towel and dried it's mouth too, and left it alone for the night. This morning it was dead. Poor thing. I always feel so guilty when they don't make it. Then later the dogs freaked out because my DH when to the store (without them), and they broke through the fence. Now they are missing. We've called the shelters, and posted on craigslist, and haven't heard anything. They have to be some where. I can't imagine someone finding 2 big lab/shepherd mixes and thinking, "hey, I'm gonna keep these guys".

I am sorry. It is always stressful when the dogs get out. Maybe they will come home by themselves when they get tired. Mine always did the few times they got out.

Ali,

I have white leghorns (I know, I know..............we should have known Deb would have them, LOL). I bought them from an exhibition line because I needed a few girls for a breeding project, but I saved back a couple of roos too. When I'm done breeding chicks for my project, I'll be putting one of the roos in and will breed some pure WL. I also am growing out some Exchequer leghorns

and will have them available in the future. I'm still not able to upload photos, but they are a gorgeous leghorn. Scroll down a bit.

WHAT??!?! YOU have a White Leghorn! Impossible!!! Ha ha JK! I KNOW you have them. We talked about it briefly several months back and I still have a trip planned to your place to see the spectacle..... OH sorry, I mean your wonderful selection of chickens!!!

You have sooooo many of the things I want and probably so many of the things I don't know I want.

the technical spot is near Merced on hwy 99
there is a Fan palm just south of a Redwood in the Center divide

Really?
I think Dusty is very pretty.

A friend of ours, that is a landscaper, put mountain lion urine on his plants to repel the deer. Now he has a cougar on his property on a regular basis and his pets are disappearing one by one.
Doh!

Yes, it is an art getting them integrated. I make sure I am home now--I have had three beaten up this year--Spanish chickens are a bit harder to work with it seems. I absolutely love them though!

Got a question for those of you that know more about birds than me....... which is probably all of you!.

How can you tell the difference between Cocci poo and just too many vitamins poo?

I have a feeling it is the runs from maybe adding too much Vitamin B Complex to the water. However they are 7-8 weeks old and have been outside a week now.....?

The poo is very runny and pumpkin colored. Of course now that I type that I think I just answered my question. The vitamins were a dark brown color...... Didn't really change the water than much, but your thoughts are appreciated anyway.

I added about 2 teaspoons to about 5 gallons of water.

Awe!!! So cute! I'm actually starting to hope that one of our hens goes broody at some point in their lives just to see things like this! I reckon one will given that we have an oprington and brahma. I don't know if Marans or OE's or Wyandottes ever go broody.

I have a broody OE right now. My other OE has never gone broody though. And wyandottes are a broody breed.

does not sound like cocci. bloody pooh , usually lethargic chicks. plus have yours been on dirt yet?

When it gets hot, chickens cool down by drinking more water than normal. The poo gets very wet then. Every 3 or 4 poos is brownish.

Symptoms are better for diagnosing cocci. Can you post a picture on them quickly?

They can die within a day of having bloody poops. If in doubt at the age yours are, start them on corid

How are they acting? Poop sounds normal, but look for them to be puffed up and lethargic for signs of cocci.

I know that those of you with big/ginormous flocks probably don't name everyone in them but Chiquita's poultry names crack me up and I am looking for a bit of inspiration for my names for both my OE's and My Dorking. My OE is from Deann and is CPxCL. This is a pic of an adult taken from the Just Struttin website and it shows what she will look like when she is grown. Any thoughts?

and here is a pick of an SGD pullet I took from the Star Rose Ranch website

I have several flower/herb names in this group of chicks...Petunia, Rosie, Angelica and Rue but also Blanche, Theresa, Harriet etc.

I love the coloring on these birds!!!

Great. I think bob must be lonely. I'm all about fedexing all the spotted skunks over to him. He needs company.

A friend of mine raises chickens and was upset that her young chickens where not eating her goodies.

I said well what are you giving them?
Garlic foliage , basil and rosemary
I said well they probably think your trying to internally season them

And welcome, ladybythelake! you're my almostneigbor. I'm over the hill in Mendocino county. Well, ok, i'm just plain over the hill. But I live in Mendocino county.

Hmmmm. I quoted all of you that responded but only one showed up.

Jason they have been on dirt for 1 week Almost. It will be a week on Sunday.

They aren't acting lethargic at all really. My concern is that I am out of town all day tomorrow and can't observe them.

I was looking for puffiness and I didn't see any.

The poo is pumpkin color. Too dark now for me to get a pic darn it. :/

It didn't look bloody but I just wasn't sure what the beginning stages look like.

Thanks for answering. I do appreciate it!
