California - Northern

I created a salad during the Live the Lifestyle eating program that I've been doing - I found a recipe and changed it to contain the veggies I can have. It's delicious and I took it to a pot luck and everyone loved it.

1 clove garlic, minced1 papaya, peeled and diced1 can of black beans, drained and rinsed1/2 cup chopped red onion1/2 cup chopped red bell pepperjuice from 1 lime3/4 cucumber chopped1/4 tsp ground cumin1/4 tsp saltFresh chopped cilantro to tastechipotle with adobo paste - use very little, it's got a kick. I did about 1/2 tsp.Combine all ingredients and stir. It makes a lot.
That sounds good too!

Ali, do you have a 5 gallon bucket you could fill with rocks to block the door for tonight? I have 1 for each coop in case I found a spot were something was digging. I would think it would be heavy enough to frustrate a coon. Our neighbor leaves food out for his cats so they are never far from us. I've seen them at 2 pm walking through our back property going for a snack.

Grandma wasn't mean, just a twisted sense of humor. I'm sure the look on my face after tasting it probably made her grin for years.
I used my 5 gallon bucket to make their waterer with the chicken nipples......

Thanks for the idea though.

We have been making little changes over the last 5 years including drinking mostly water, not drinking soda (used to have 1-2 Cokes per day), increasing fruits & vegies, and limiting sugar. I think that's why this wasn't a huge adjustment for us. Losing weight is a nice bonus but feeling healthy is the real benefit. I have suffered all my life with eczema and this diet change has almost completely gotten rid of it. I would rather not eat sugar, etc. than wake up at 3 AM with my hands & arms itching so badly that I can't go back to sleep. It is all about wise choices based on your own body! All things are permissable but not all things are profitable!

Congrats. So glad to hear your Eczema is almost completely gone.

I was given Morphine when I had a c-section with my son and it turns out I am allergic. I broke out with a Morphine Rash that lasted 3 days. I thought I would go crazy. There I was with a little baby and all I could think about was the itching. I went to the hospital a couple of times to get benedryl shots because the pills and cream were not working. It was horrible. I really feel for people who suffer from Eczema on a regular basis.

It amazes me how many ailments and be cured with changing our diet.

just saying THANKS (once again!) to Deann, for a lovely visit this morning & two beautiful SFH pullets that are now hanging out in their very own Transit Lounge (aka enclosure pen) inside the coop/run with my other chicks their same age. they are SO gorgeous! although they look an awful lot alike -- will have to start studying their coloring patterns to tell one from the other.

Do they look like this? This one is 8 weeks old. I thought she was older but my math was off....

I hatched some eggs from Deann and just found out I had a surprise egg in the mix! I didn't buy any SFH but I got one! YAY! That is always fun!

they are lighter than yours, more grey and red and white mottled... i'll try to get some photos. congratulations on yours!

Ali's post about her SFH surprise made me think...next winter/spring if I get a broody or two would anyone be willing to swap a few of my mix bag eggs for a few of theirs? I don't want to spend a lot of money on eggs before I know a girl is tried and true and I think it would be fun to see what I got in a grab bag don't care if they are purebred or not. Have I mentioned I like variety???

Good for you! I go back and forth between being Popeye "I am what I am and that's all that I am"..... and wanting to feel my best. I have a 6 year old to keep up with.

One note on the RLS. I am starting to develop this and it comes and goes. I believe it may be a Magnesium deficiency....... along with some other vitamin and mineral deficiencies. I notice it goes away when I remove caffiene and supplement with certain minerals..... just a thought, because RLS is ANNOYING!!!!
Leg pain can also be a potassium deficiency.
Potassium deficiency usually causes leg cramps, eat a banana or potato

(better with butter, sour cream, cheese and bacon bits

).

Mag. deficiency is more of an ache and of course RLS - fidgeting, itching from the inside

It's amazing how well our bodies can tell us what they need sometimes.

Okay so I have been on here a long while and read peoples problems with critters. I just went outside to close up the chickens and on the fence between my neighbors and my property was a rather ugly raccoon. I used to think they were pretty but this thing was not. It saw me and promptly went back down the neighbors tree and trotted off. I would guess that he was probably 15-20 lbs at least. Here is my question. It wasn't even dark yet and he was coming around. Is that typical? How strong are they in terms of being able to pull wire apart? I could see he could climb rather gracefully. Now I am concerned about the top of my run and coop. I have the door for the ramp into the coop only held closed by a couple bricks but they have to get into the run first. Are they good diggers? Anything I can do to scare them away? I only have a shot gun and I am not using that in town. If he gets in my coop I will probably hear it. How do I get him out without damage to me? **** thing looked like the neighborhood gangster! Thanks for any advice. Edited to ask. Is **** a swear word? It stared out my word above like I am a sailor or something. Lolol. Edited again to say that big brother is editing my posts. I am not sure I like that. Dam is not really that bad is it?
Out of all the predators here in Tahoe the raccoons are the most NASTY!!!!!!! We have never had them do digging, but they can undo almost any latch and scale most surfaces. We also have never had them rip open chicken wire BUT if they can reach in and grab hold of a bird ther gross little hands will rip it to peices and drag it through the wire!!!! The bears go for the grain ( unless something is wrong with them and they are eating too much garbage ) and the coyotes take the Birds out to the meadow... But those raccoons leave the bits ALL over and we cry the whole time we clean up!!!!! If we see tracks we will set out rat snap traps with bells attached ( cat food and chips in it) around the coop and on the roof when we close up for the night. Same for coyotes . In the morning I unlatch them ( we have littles) and put them out of reach. We keep the BB gun loaded with sharp pellets and the boys run to the upper deck when they get into the traps... Works for us.
Ahhh, thanks! I've always liked the old lady past times and now it's good since I'm an old lady, LOL Ali, the first thing I'd do is get on Amazon and order a Havahart trap. They are quick and you should have it by mid week. Then all you need is a cheap can of cat food and a 22. SSS In the meantime, I'd make sure everything is as secure as possible. Raccoons are very good at finding a way in. Once they've found a food source they will keep coming back!
Yes being a hot spot is BAD
:he Do you have a BB gun? That would be a little quieter, I just bought some pointy, hollow tip, metal BB's.

Raccoons are smart about getting into things.
Those are so great!!!!
