The chicks hatched!! I have 8 of the 9 that went into lockdown. One didn't make it

. Much better than last time. I have SLW, BLRW, and Black Wyandottes. They are so cute!!

I know some of you guys have (or had) Quail. Does anyone know a good place to get some hatching eggs, and which breed would be best for meat and eggs?

I have coturnix and bobwhite quail (yeah, yeah Kelly, I know). There is absolutely no question, it's the coturnix (Japanese) you are looking for. They hatch in 16 days, and 42 days later they start to lay eggs or are ready to process.

Bobwhites take longer to hatch than chickens and just as long to reach maturity (for eggs or processing), about 5 mos.

If you want me to collect some quail eggs for you, let me know, I get 2-3 dozen per day.

So sorry about people's predator issues! We live on an Osprey path to the lake but it is the red tails that are the real threat. they come for the Pea chicks and would stay for the chickens but the only free rangers now are too big for them.
Those look like hatch mates to my little guy. Same blue and red and white. D@mn they were in the brooder together and I had to grab the boy

They are super pretty!
A wise woman once said, "what you have and what you are supposed to have are often two different things" According to Happy Chooks you have at least one and he would make some awfully pretty speckled babies.

dont count on a red tail not taking a free ranger.
I lost 8 adults in a week and a half to a red tail

congrats

took some more chick update pictures -- in case of interest!

gold duckwing araucana boy, nearly 7 weeks old

he's SO pretty, but i'm not sure i'll keep either of the araucana boys, as it sounds like eggs from this breed are incredibly difficult to hatch

black-brested red araucana boy, who's developed much slower than his two siblings (i didn't get any photos of the silver duckwing girl)

one of the two birchen marans chicks, 4 weeks old today -- this is looking like a boy, the other a girl

one of the new SFH girls -- Ali, they are probably the same age as your chick, so maybe can compare comb etc?

and the other, who might have slightly more red in her plumage?

max jr. (CL/SFH cross)in front, who is almost 9 weeks and looking more and more like a girl! plus the two CL chicks, nearly 6 weeks -- Charlotte (reaching up) is getting a wee crest, and Harold (sitting) has incredibly bright comb/wattles already

two isbar/marans crosses on the right, blue isbar (looking like perhaps a boy?) in left foreground, harold in the back -- all nearly 6 weeks, but the isbar & isbar crosses seem to be developing their combs/wattles much more slowly than the CLs?

and last but not least, one of the campines, asleep.
You certainly have a beautiful flock. The Campine is striking

Let 4 of the little girls out to "range" in a pen today...Petunia

Easter Eggers Lilly in front and Rose in back with Petunia

Blanche...CA Grey

Is that it? Everything else is comparable tempermentaly ?
No, that is just the most obvious one. I have not had the OD long enough (only 1+ months) so I don't feel qualified to chime in much more. I do know that the Swedes come in a multitude of colors and the OD have a fairly consistent pattern with only slight variations.

I watched my first chick hatch today, it was so cool! So far I have 2 BCM's, an Ameracauna is pipped and another BCM is rocking, may be pipped by now.
How fun! The first time is so special!! How many hatched? Who did you get your eggs from? Are you hatching true Ameraucanas and what color are they? My inquiring mind wants to know
lol.png
How are your EE chicks doing? Hope you post pictures of your chicks

Quote: I got my OD from Chooklet also and I have quite a bit of variety in them. I have both grey legged and yellow legged. I have birds that are primarily the reddish color and one cockerel that has a great deal of black.

I can't comment on the SFH, I've never owned them........................there you go Kelly, something I don't have

I got my eggs from Karen (sewandgrow). I got 4 BCM, 1 Ameraucana, and 3 OE's. All of the BCM's hatched, and the 1 Ameraucana. I'm not having a good feeling about the last 3 OEs, think mama's going to leave the nest soon. I don't hear anything in the eggs either. The Ameraucana is black so far, I think she has B/B/S. I will go out and get some new chick pics. The EE's are doing good, so far no crowing so I think I got 2 girls. Yay!
