California - Northern

Does anyone happen to know who breeds Rock bantams (columbian) in Nor Cal?
I already have a pair, but the hen is going on 5 years old and this last fair she really flipped out so I'm thinking she needs to go into retirement. Finding a replacement or two however is proving to be hard, so thought I would check on here (sorry if this is the wrong thread lol). Thanks!

There has to be someone, there were quite a few shown at the Red Bluff show, one went Reserve of Breed. I'm not sure who owned them, I only raise barred and black, but I can check around for you if you'd like.

Well, I have Columbians, but only in LF.

Debs Flock....you have inspired me! I am going to enter my cheesecake in our fair at the end of July! I can't believe I am finally entering something. My family has been trying to get me to do this for years!

Yay for Mossy Oak!!!!!!!!!!!! Keep us filled in on the details.

Last night our dish washer door burst open mid wash but didn't turn off. It spewed water all over the laminate floor. Today said floor is warped in two spots. Tomorrow DH and I go get a new diswasher.

In chicken news.
Della is feeling much better and is complaining loudly about her shoddy treatment in isolation. She has not laid an egg since Thursday or Friday I would like to keep her in at least till tomorrow afternoon so I can see if/what she lays. Crop feels normal and she is eating again.

I think Beakface the Australorp is Broody

She has been on the nest since yesterday morning sitting tight on two golf balls and a mango seed. I thought she broke late this morning but she apparently was just taking her break and was back on the nest next time I checked. She walks around with her feathers and tail all fluffed. Did that for a few days before she started sitting. Does that mean anything?

Yes, that is broody behavior all right! I bet she also makes sounds as she stomps around when off the nest.... Even the broody ducks do it. When I hear that sound I will check to see which broody hen it is, in case it's a new one.

yep...my kids and husband sniff the meat in the fridge to see if it's gone over the edge :) on the bright side I get to miss out on dog farts and chicken poop.
Chiquita???

I feed King. I have to go look at the the lable. They were out of layer pellets so this is a flock raiser. What did you do for vitamins? I have Durvet electrolytes and vitamins for hot days. Should I try that on the regular?
Everyone blames the poor dog.......

Now why does a dishwasher door bust open? Does it have that much power?

Mine did that on my hardwood floor at my old house and ALL the boards warped but in the summer they dried out and went back down. They were "warped" for about 5 months. Of course that was wood, and not laminate. So bummer on the laminate but maybe the same thing will happen????

I used Avia Charge as I had it on hand.

Large Fowl or bantam? What color variety?

Thank you. He looks like his father. But my rooster, Moose, is getting up there in age - he is almost 4 years old. So I wanted a son out of him while I have the chance.

Here is his father, Moose, at 6 months old:

And his son yesterday, at 5 months old. He still has a lot of filling in to do, but I think he'll turn out wonderfully.
Wow..... Dad is huge and pretty. I would be interested to see Jr at 6 months in a comparison. Just to see how much difference a month makes. Right now Max Jr. has chicken legs.

My ex did too......

No chicken tv on this rainy day. At least we got the wire up and 1/2 the rocks around their yard before the storm flew in!
Nice and big. Did you get those rocks locally?

I received a return call from my wildlife control person at the Dept of Ag this morning and he was very nice. They provide the trap and come out and get the animal too. No charge!

I asked him what he would recommend for bait and he said to leave out a chicken egg for both Skunks and Raccoons. If it works, I like that idea better than cat food, since I do have some random cats in the neighborhood. He also let me know that a lady down the street from me trapped 30 skunks last year! Holy cow! THIRTY?!?!

He also said my coop was build pretty securely..... he seemed kind of impressed....

It isn't pretty, but functional. He recommended I put another layer of hardware cloth along the bottom to about 3 feet up, because he said he has seen the Raccoons pull back and forth on the hardware cloth until it loosens and then they can get in.

I screwed it in to the wood, but I guess if I worked at it long enough it could come loose. Raccoon fingers are smaller than mine and can probably grip that cloth easier than I can.

Just a tidbit for anyone in Placer County.

Granite left over from one of dh jobs. I'm pleased because they are super heavy. Hopefully next week my second coop will be up with spare lumber from a frame going up right now...

Would you believe it... My sexed Australorp pulled went and turned into a roo. The weird thing is its the second year in a row that happened. I think they (s&w feed store) use ideal... Bummed cause I love the olive eggs from the Australorp cross. Oh we'll more space in the coop once I figure what to do with him!

Before we do build the second coop I would like a second opinion. The coop will be 4x6 interior, the predator proof run will be 10x4, and they will have 28x32 square yard every other day. How may happy chickens can I squish in there?

or the 18 y/o boy :)

Mine may have been compromised several years back when I was dancing in the kitchen and tripped over than sat on it at a high rate of speed. But there are no witnesses so....

Thanks... we can hope
I have my 4 big girls who are not in sick bay or on the nest out with my baby brown egg layers and my Icelandic babies. The Icelandics were already letting themselves out so I figured what the heck. They look so pretty running around the yard! Red, White, Gold, Brown, Speckled, Black feathery coolness

Icelandics are the best at giving you that rainbow of babies! Colors, combs, crests, feathering...............there's not much they can't do. Including escape
