California - Northern

Don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled to not be dealing with the heat during chores, but I thought the rain was only supposed to be yesterday.  Today was only supposed to be a chance of showers.  I'm going to wait on the bulk of my outside chores until this afternoon, hoping things dry out, but I HAVE to go feed the sheep, open up a couple of brooder sheds and turn the turkeys out of their nighttime pen.  I am ready for DH to get home from AZ.  He does all the outside chores normally except the ones I WANT to do    I realize I'm spoiled, but I like it that way!

Last night when I locked up, I could see three turkey eggs in their shelter, but I looked at the "mud" I'd have to walk through and thought......................"oh, I'll get those tomorrow", LOL  And now it rained all night.  I'll need to wear barn boots, ick! :sick

This weather is ridiculous!
I heard is going to be triple digits on the weekend too. :/

Hopefully your quarantine will be sufficient. What did Davis say (if you want to share)?
It is something particularly devastating, It might be a good idea to get a second opinion. The Labs can get it wrong sometimes and you really want to know.

Might be hard though if the others are not sick or showing symptoms.

It's a presumptive finding for merrikks. The lab test was negative, but they found small lesions so they are assuming that was it.

My quarintine was fairly good. Did not do stuff with both sets of birds at the same time, and bleached hands and feet when I left garage. Did not change my shirt every time however. I did NOT know merriks was from dander. He is the right age, ( 6 months,) for something to happen. I thought they were 1.5 but i read the date wrong. Shipping is traumatic, so I imagine it came out while in transit.

They are in metal cage and on linolium, (There is a false wall behind them even of boxes, so it is doable to sanitize the area, unlike if they were on ground or on wood, etc.) so I bleached it to all get out last night, and got rid of all the litter. There is zero symptoms in anyone else, but I'm not sure if that means anything.

I'm going to spray the chickens themselves today with oxine, didn't want to do it while it was so cold before. The real question is, do I have to cull everyone in there, or not. Killing very expensive asympotomatic birds would be painful.

I'm going to see if I can talk to someone at Davis and get some advice. I have been going back and forth on it since yesterday. I read About Cheryls case in BYC history, I know several people here have had cases and it has not gotten the entire flock. I'm also wondering if I should let CJ know, or if that is a moot point.

Well, that was an interesting conversation.

She said there is no point culling the other girls, because it's everywhere and the strains in the US are not very different. The exact words were. "they have all already been exposed before you got these chickens. They will either get symptoms or not."

She also said they are starting to vaccinate in the egg over day old because day old has already been exposed. I do not know how you vaccinate an egg. I suppose I should look it up.

I Thought I had done something weird when I vaccinated for newcastles, I didn't even think of other neural diseases.

It's my understanding that's it's so common in the environment that there wouldn't be much point in that. Just continue to cull any birds that show symptoms. Stress, crowding, shipping, many things can cause it to present. It can have a rapid onset to where it's even possible he contracted it at this end (not saying that's the case, just a possibility).

I think the best thing is to continue to breed for resistance.

They also say it's helpful to run turkeys with your chickens, so you're good there.

Good luck!
