We have had possoms get into our breese coop over the bird netting, so its not predator proof. My coops are, however, so it was not an issue for us. I just predator proof the sleeping places. The only issues I have had were having a door torn off ( that woke me up and I added second locks to the doors so you can't pry them off the hinges) daytime bobcat ( got nothing for that one) Or birds that won't go in the coop ( grrr!)

Can possums climb up wire fence?

What tore the door off?

It's probably easier to find them a home when they are older, most of them are probably eaten

Although I've sold a few roosters for $20 each that people drove a long way to pick them up. It's unlikely they were eating them after that. HUGE roosters seem to sell fairly well.
So do you really have a bunch of Serama roosters? I have 3 girls (pretty sure) 2 of them are laying.

I have to do 90 % off the chicken stuff. My husband will build coops. I do EVERYTHING else ... It is way to much work for me. That is why I'm going to down size. I'm going to keep most of the breeds I have, just maybe 4/5 hens and 1/2 roosters from each breed. I can't wait until I get things under control.
I did sale 10 roosters yesterday and I have 10 more going Friday...happy Dance !

So I have an opinion question to ask you.

I have been rehoming Roosters via Craigs List, and I try to make sure they don't go to anyone for any nefarious purpose, but you can only go by what a person says.

I have at least 5 more Roosters and probably a couple more that I am a little more attached to and I am finding it more difficult to give them away. Should I wait until they are older and see if I have an issue with the nieghbors, or should I just find homes for them now? Is it easier to find homes for them at 9 weeks or when they start to crow?

Here is one of the Wheaten's and he is so pretty already.

Thoughts?
He is good looking. seems real mellow and likes his perch
I need ideas on how to predator proof the top of a pen. I used wire livestock panels, the kind with 2x4 grid (like no climb horse fencing). The pen is 16 x 19. 5 feet high. I was planning on putting some lightweight poly or metal roofing on the top, but DH says that can't be done because of the size of the pen.
If I put bird netting on top, do you think that would keep night time predators out?

I'm using this as a grow out pen for my - way too many cockerels- who are running amok in my yard.

Thanks for any ideas!
check ebay for heavy duty poultry netting. you have to secure it every couple feet and let it drape over the side some. they wont get in that way

yes anything that climbs a tree can climb most wire

i think my chickens might secretly be reading this thread on their own -- all the discussion of broodies, and what do you know, one of my cuckoo marans is now broody -- sitting tight on a fake egg & all the feathers gone from her breast. at least it's only ONE broody this time! trying to decide whether to get her some eggs or some hatchlings or... not.

I got 2 cockrels out of 3 bantam Cochin chicks. The first feathered out rather quickly and he was pushy - bossing around the other 2 banties and my CL and NJ pullets. I placed a CL ad but had zero responses. He was tiny and not soup material. I opted to place him at Bradshaw Feed as they had an open cage and do sell them (you get nothing from the sale). My second little roo feathered in slowly. He is a Frizzle. As was bound to happen, he began practing his crow earlier this week, at the 10 week point. Again I placed a CL ad and so far received 2 totallly sketchy odd ball responses :-(. For good measure, I placed an add here on BYC for local pick up. I understand the bonding - I would drive anywhere in No Cal (almost) to give him a life as he is a good soul. I try to keep focused on my 3 pullets as they are my keepers. Here in the middle of the city, I knew going in that getting "rid" of my roos wouldn't be easy. I am totally relieved that I reached my 3 hen quota (thanks, Molly!), Your Wheaten is a beauty and looks far more girly than my little Frizzle! Best of luck to you.
