California - Northern

One thing this two day rain spell did was show me what I have to do before winter. I had to put a tarp up over the run and I didn't do it quite right so I did get some spots of rain in the run. But better than nothing. I do think I will need to put something up around the bottom because all the sand I thankfully put down was wet around the edges. I am not sure what else to do..... Even with that I think it will get pretty muddy out there.

So I have an opinion question to ask you.

I have been rehoming Roosters via Craigs List, and I try to make sure they don't go to anyone for any nefarious purpose, but you can only go by what a person says.

I have at least 5 more Roosters and probably a couple more that I am a little more attached to and I am finding it more difficult to give them away. Should I wait until they are older and see if I have an issue with the nieghbors, or should I just find homes for them now? Is it easier to find homes for them at 9 weeks or when they start to crow?

Here is one of the Wheaten's and he is so pretty already.

Thoughts?

You're lucky that you can find someone to take them off Craigslist, I couldn't pay someone to take them here in Modesto. Do you live in residential neighborhood where they aren't legal to have?

It's probably easier to find them a home when they are older, most of them are probably eaten

Although I've sold a few roosters for $20 each that people drove a long way to pick them up. It's unlikely they were eating them after that. HUGE roosters seem to sell fairly well.

I need ideas on how to predator proof the top of a pen. I used wire livestock panels, the kind with 2x4 grid (like no climb horse fencing). The pen is 16 x 19. 5 feet high. I was planning on putting some lightweight poly or metal roofing on the top, but DH says that can't be done because of the size of the pen.
If I put bird netting on top, do you think that would keep night time predators out?

I'm using this as a grow out pen for my - way too many cockerels- who are running amok in my yard.

Thanks for any ideas!

We have had possoms get into our breese coop over the bird netting, so its not predator proof. My coops are, however, so it was not an issue for us. I just predator proof the sleeping places. The only issues I have had were having a door torn off ( that woke me up and I added second locks to the doors so you can't pry them off the hinges) daytime bobcat ( got nothing for that one) Or birds that won't go in the coop ( grrr!)

It feels like Florida! This is why I hated living there! It's like hitting a brick wall stepping outside! Hopefully the humidity goes back down before it gets really hot.

I hate it. I've never been outside of California. Lived in the valley most of my life. This humidity is not making me feel any good. Its hot and its sticky... yuck

I wanted to work in my garden today, but I couldn't even stand being out there just checking on the broodies and their babies. 2 broodies are supposed to hatch tomorrow, so more drama in the chicken coop. (thankfully one is in the other coop) Gotta get their private areas ready tomorrow.
