California - Northern

I like them too. Didn't think I wood, but I do!

Come move up to Nevada County! It's cooler up here

And we can have roosters :)

Deciding sucks...
Way back during the Gold Rush Days, my Moms family settled in the New Castle area. Going up that way would be like moving back to the Ancestral place(I watched Oh Brother Where Art Though again last weekend--he took his fellow escapees to see the Ancestral Manse....A shack in the Woods....)

What is on the side???

back side or front side?

On the side is not as obvious. I would still send the bird in for Necropsy to be sure either way. Unless the broken neck was obvious.

Yep, I'd send her off for necropsy to be sure.

Do I need to start providing a grit for my chickens? I know that the sand was fine when they were little, and they still have access to it now, along with rocks of all different sizes(see the video I posted, look at the ground). But now that they're getting older I'm assuming this won't cut it any more...So should I buy them grit

Yes! I keep grit in one little chick feeder and Oyster shell calcium in another. Woodland has clay soil so they will have a hard time getting the right rocks for grinding.

I assume I would get grit at my local feed store...what is it called? Just 'grit'? How much should I get & how much should I give to them?

Just offer it free choice, like oyster shell. I've never had to buy grit, we have enough small rocks in our hard.

Redding is a funny place, some parts have lots of small rocks and other parts have red clay. If there are plenty of grit like rock they will not need free choice grit.

Are you planning on staying up there this year? It would be fun if several of us stayed in the same place! I am still voting for the KOA but I think that my friend and her husband are leaning towards a hotel. The KOA is nice because if you like to camp, the price for a tent site isn't that much. Plus, I love having a campfire and the pool is very nice!
Depends on everyone's schedule. Getting someone to watch the menagerie is not an easy task. Four labs can be intimidating, not to mention the little ankle bitter!!!

But I'll keep trying....

I picked up two of those at Costco a few months back too.  The price there was much better than the price at the feed/pet store.  They charge around $45 for one at the feed stores.  However, I do like that lid from Home Depot on a cheap or free 5 gallon bucket.  That makes the price under $10.  That is even better!  Thanks for the ideas.

I have currently been trekking back and forth from the garage with the feed to try to keep rodents away, and it just never occurred to me to leave it outside in the run or by the run.  Seems so exposed and that it might attract bigger critters like Skunks and Raccoons?

I have those special lids from HD on 5 gal buckets, too. Lids have an outer ring which remains on the bucket and requires several twists to create a waterproof seal - easy for me. Neither local skunks nor racoons yet showed any interest. If they ever do, I will move buckets inside the run. I like the portability factor with a handle on the bucket, too. I keep mine about half full and refill as needed from stash in garage (sealed in Rubbermaid trash container along with surplus dog/cat food).

I don't know if you wanted to wait that long for a companion, but I'll probably be going to the Expo this year.

Your friends here in P'ville are probably coming this afternoon for three girls. In fact, I need to go out and snag the campine I have my eye on for them.
Hi Deb!

Id rather not wait that long if possible..... my remianing Silkie seems to be doing okay so far, but she has changed her routine. She is usually very broody. She'll come out, eat, drink, bathe and then she goes back on the nest. But since I got home from vacation, she is out of the coop a lot more and makes a lot more noise....I think she may be looking for her companion? Not sure.... my boyfriend thinks maybe she is getting more independent... isn't that an example of how different a male and female mind works?

Anyway, if you find a little girl before the Expo, that would be great. I do work during the day, so it would have to be a weekend trip for me..... Again, thanks so much!

Ok. So the guy emailed me back . 7$ a chicken and he is in Lincoln . Do you people know how many of your homes I will pass to get there?!? I would end up bringing more new babies home then I took to camp kenmore ( thank you for that expression deb!)

If anyone knows of a person for hire id love the info. It would be nice if I could find someone where it wouldn't be so many hours on the road... I haven't got the ok to do it here...
