California - Northern

I would say Bakersfield? But I am in Modesto, solidly on the Northern side!! lol
Hi!

There are a lot of us from the Modesto area on here.

How are your chickens doing?

I think you are correct. Somewhere on highway 99 there is actually a Pine tree and a Palm tree planted along the road signifying the divide between North and South, just can't recall where. But you are right that we in the Central Valley (I am in Modesto) think of ourselves first as Central CA, secondarily, Northern CA since far north is such a different geography than Central. No comparison between Mt. Shasta and Modesto, that's for sure!!

The noon TV weather forecast for today was "low nineties, warming up later this week."

"Warming" up? Once we're above 70 degrees, it's already "WARM." After 80, it's HOT! Nineties, "low" or not, are brutal. Warm up. What are these people, visitors from the planet Mercury?!?

96 here. <*muttering*> " Warm.". My sweaty butt!

I say this same thing, in fact again just Tuesday when we did the cockerel. DH does the kill (although I think we've done enough I could do that now too), I scald and pluck (I'll admit I perversely like the sound of the plucking), then I remove the feet and put the bird in cool water for about ten minutes to cool down a bit. It is disconcerting to reach into a still warm body. I generally do three birds at a time, when I do I just let them all sit in cool water until I get to that point with all three, then I eviscerate them in order.

We're going to process a small turkey this morning and see if we like to eat them so small. I can't grow out all the poults I hatched, I must have close to 50. I have another eight eggs in the hatching nursery at State Fair.

Oh gosh, don't think I could do either part. Maybe if I had broilers and not more egg breeds and none of them were named and loved on and they were just "meat birds".

arghh, my cat Sophie has managed to tear open her neck wound (the one that she probably got from a bobcat swipe) again, even though the stitches came out over two weeks ago and it ought to be totally healed. and she's a formerly feral cat who's utterly freaked out by vet visits, so i'm spraying it with Vetericyn while trying to find a vet who makes house calls. it's a nasty-looking gash -- I actually started the Vetericyn last night & it seemed to be helping, but then she scratched the spot and managed to tear it even more. poor girl!
