So.... Went to pick up one new kitty and ended up with two ( that makes four total) ... Meet up with Juststruttin for a doz eggs and ended up with three doz, signed up for the August box swap( more eggs I hope) , family coming up for the weekend, and my 40 th celebration. only thing missing is the grand baby due on the 25th. Oh my goodness what an exciting weekend!

Is there a chicken math addiction overcomes thread;-)

Very artistic! Beauties! I am so glad my small city lot limits my flock to 3. Otherwise I'd be succumbing to chicken math in a bad way. As it is, we are veteran DIYers with 15 years of projects on our current home. Jack only half way jokingly told someone this morning that he implements projects slower than I buy things for the "next" honey do. But we have a funky home that suits us well. And keeping busy is important. We have no problem with the busy part and appreciate retirement because we can indulge ourselves even more often

. I am in charge of concepts and serve as chief laborer while Jack does the execution very well. (Not that we don't have some gnashing of teeth, but almost always are united in being proud of the results).

i hadn't heard of CSU! (and felt confused at first, as i work for the CSU, aka CA State University) -- but have signed up!

and in the meantime, here's the other broody Jane with her one very-active-so-far chick, there's another that's partway out of the shell at this point:

I have a big dog and a little dog. Both literally pound puppy mixes. The big dog is part lab possibly and she seems a bit intimidated by the pullets in their run. Our little guy is the one I don't trust. Have yet to let them mix. The little guy is a terrier mix and does dispatch rodents swiftly - am suspicious that he'd get too excited and prey drive fired up. Maybe will try some supervised encounters when the hens are fully grown. The dogs both respect me but no way will I ever trust them alone with my chicks.
It was awful and I learned my lesson! I can see a peacock putting a dog in its place lol

Too funny! Early congratulations on your grandchild

. Boy or girl? Any idea of names yet? Is this your first or? Hopefully the baby comes soon so you can ease up on acquiring more pets. Best of luck to you and the new parents.

gotta love the mama chicken looking at the babies

Spent the hottest and most humid part of yesterday at the State Fair. We live in River Park which is just across the river from Cal Expo. Took until yesterday to get over to check out the chickens and chicks. I got irked at a 7 year old girl who ran up to the panting chickens and chased them to the coop - I raised my voice and told her to STOP when she started under the coop. Was waiting for the mom to launch herself at me but zero response. To me or her kids. Poor chickens! The babies inside got lots of attention and made me sigh as it was just yesterday it seems that I brought my babies home from Miss Molly's.

BTW - there is a grass fire burning not far from me this afternoon. We were at a flooring store on Commerce Circle and at Cal Expo Costco this afternoon before the fire broke out. It doesn't take much to get fires going this summer

. Hope everyone has defensible space around your properties and chickens.

Corgi's and any other herding breeds are great with chickens. They are super smart and quick to train. Any of the Livestock Guardian breeds would be good as well.
Of course my little 4 pounder yorkie chihuahua gets along great with my chickens.....as far as he is concerned they are little treat machines

. and my girls think he is just another chicken.

Training is always key. It takes a ton of work.but is worth it in the end.
I think my 2 shepherd/Lab mixes would eat the chickens if they could. The older one just stands there and drools if we bring a chick inside. The chicken yard is completely fenced off from the rest of the yard, so they can't get over there.

My bigger chicks are getting huge! They are running outside with the big girls now. Most of these are the one's from Jason. I think all of them ended up in pairs. What is your opinion of the dark brown one. That one is the Penedesenca chick that was gender confused. The two I'm thinking are pullets have different coloring.

The "then" picture

And now. They are almost 8 weeks old.

I see 2 crele hens and 2 crele roosters. The darker one is a hen that is taking longer to get her neck coloring. You do have a Empordanesa pair as well there

So sweet!

I picked up 4 EE's for my broodies today. My Production Red had a couple of eggs that were developing when I got back from my hike, so I let her keep them. If they are no longer developing, then she will get 2 and the egg crusher Orp will get 2. Otherwise, I'll give them all to the Orp. She had better take them if she knows what is good for her!
your production red went broody?!?? One of mine has made some motions in that direction but hasn't committed I didn't think she would but maybe she will...

Busy stuff. Congratulations on the critters and the one due around the corner!

We have twin daughters that just graduated college. First born has been actively pursuing her dream of one day owning and running a barn/stable....what else do you do with a Theology degree right??

Anyway she has an unpaid (but room and board) internship for 2-3 months which will turn into a paid "head groom" position if she works out at this place http://kristinschmolze.net/ in New Jersey!!! She was hired day before yesterday and leaves early tuesday a.m. Exciting stuff going on around here.

Our son is heading to CSM in a couple of weeks and that leaves us with just one kid at home and with any luck she will find a real job SOOOON!

In the meantime school starts for me on 8/12 so she can be the day time chicken keeper/ house keeper/ errand runner and cook while I am at work. The goal is to make it such a pain to stay home she can't wait to go be a grown up
