Hey Amy! Nice to see you! Some of my heavier breeds have stopped laying. I agree in giving her more time. They really don't eat much when they aren't laying, plus yours are ranging.

As for your rooster/buff hen situation, that is really strange.

It reminds me of a Paula Poundstone routine about people on a plane not liking the people on the left side of the plane--We do not know why we don't like them--we just do not like them....

I so don't have enough experience with chickens to even offer an opinion, but it seems really strange. She must be at the bottom of the pecking order? I am wondering if you got rid of her if he would do that to the next one that ends up at the bottom? I am just guessing. Maybe she isn't at the bottom?

You know there are times in life when I react that way with people. I just don't like them from the moment I meet them and the sound of their voice grates on my nerves. Maybe it is the same in the chicken world.

Unfortunately I can't act on my impulses like chickens can.......
lol I thought maybe she was at the bottom too. She is the most bedraggled looking of the 4 I have. I'm hoping after her molt she will feel renewed. :D
just a small update: Jane the light sussex and her two campine chicks have been out again this afternoon, and they seem to finally be getting the hang out it. the smaller one is easily distracted by patches of sunlight, it LOVES to warm up -- but it seems to make ALL the difference that it's 70° out instead of 55°! (no heat wave here!)

and Frances the SPPR broody that been playing "auntie" came out for a stretch at the same time as Jane & chicks -- but after a snack and some water, went right back to her eggs. no bonding with her babysitting charges!
Yay! That is good news!

Hello! Thanks- it is strange. The other hens don't pick on her- just the rooster. He is extra extra bossy with her. If she lays an egg and does her announcement when she is done he comes running like a bat out of hell from 50-60 feet away and grabs her neck fluff and pulls down on her. It's very odd. But again only to her. Not the other Buffs nor the other hens. And I know it's the same hen because she wears a certain saddle. Poor thing. She's not sick or doing poorly either- I guess he just doesn't like her or maybe he has an Edward Cullen type relationship and that's his Bella? hahahaha

LOL Maybe that's whats happening here.

I am bidding on some adult chickens and they would be shipped from Florida. Anyone had experience with shipping adults? I'm really hoping they don't die
Personally I would not take the risk. It is too hot to ship this time of year. See if seller will hold birds til October or November

One of my 4-H kids ordered birds twice, the seramas didn't make it and the buttercups looked like different birds and their feet were badly damaged.

I have had birds shipped a few times. if its too hot on either side usps will not do it.
you may have to wait till its below 90 for a good stretch..

its stressful on the birds so unless they are a very rare breed it may not be worth it.

welcome back Amy..

I have been slow to type but reading.
so not posting much this eek . I cut2 fingers bad on glass so had 2 stiches on one finger. 3 on the other. that one to the bone.

I am sorry for your hand! Glass cuts can be very bad.

I was doing the happy dance last night! We were able to see stars overhead, first time since Saturday. I'm tired of living in a campfire. The smoke is thinner this morning, I can almost see the trees leaves rather than just the siloette. Hoping since we have a little break they can get the helocopters back up to help with the fires.
