and before they go under Frances, here are the marans eggs -- not sure which are which, the sender didn't label them clearly:

one in with my usual mix of SPPR, basque, australorp, and amelia (green) eggs -- SO much darker!!

well, they are a mix of birchen marans and duckwing marans -- so i'll know once they hatch! some of them have "2" written on them, but i don't know what that means... have sent the woman i got them from an email asking.

That would be eggs from breeding pen 2 usually. Sometimes it is a certain hen though.

I need to look up a picture of Duckwing Marans. Are they from Thistledown Farms?

no, they are from a breeder named April Howington, H and H Poultry near Austin, Texas -- and i couldn't find any pictures of a duckwing marans either, i think they are a project she is working on. hopefully she'll email back with a which-is-what description of the eggs -- a small number of them are less speckled and much smoother than the rest, i suspect those are the duckwings.

here's her websites: http://www.handhpoultry.com/ and http://www.texasmarans.com/

and Stacey at Thistledown no longer lists birchen marans on her website, so i'm not sure if she's decided to stop breeding them or...? the two i've hatched from her are beautiful, but apparently are not particularly close (so far) to the SOP (the pullet has silver lacing on some of her body feathers, which should be black, silver on the neck only -- and the boy doesn't have any silver on his neck yet, although i suspect some will come in) -- not that i'm planning on breeding to the SOP, but perhaps Stacey wasn't satisfied & decided to give them up? not sure.

Well, I have not heard back from the vet yet, but I am really leaning towards cocci......poops that were normal this morning are certainly not normal this afternoon. Runny, bloody, not good at all. She has however perked up a bit this afternoon so maybe the corrid is working a bit.. She did eat a scrambled egg earlier, and some apple
I just had one of my reds behave the same way you originally described. She just seemed "off" to me and was puffed up and just standing in the run. I freaked out and started setting up the dog crate to bring her in the house and when I went back out she had dropped this nasty soft gooshy egg. After that she was right as rain. Weird.

I posted this in the emergencies and illnesses thread but was hoping some of you could help me out too. Thanks. She is generally a happy girl though thinking on it now she used to always be the first in the house if the door was open but she hasn't done that since she was sick. I think I will weigh her since weight loss is a sign too.

Hi I am bumping this post because I have not had a lot of success in my research. I wanted to also give more information and an update on Della.

I treated her for sour crop and she responded.

Since then she has not laid a single "normal" egg. She has laid maybe 4 or 5 super soft shelled either below the roosts or in the run.

When I feel between her legs I can feel something in there but nothing ever comes of it

One thing I did read is that internal layers have reverse peristalsis in their ova tract so that the eggs don't make it to the vent instead they travel the wrong way and are deposited in the abdomen. She has laid an enormous egg with a normal sized egg inside which I also understand is a result of reverse peristalsis. She is 15 mos old now and other than for the first month she was laying has never been "normal" in terms of her laying. Soft shelled, shellless, weird things like what is pictured above...those are her normal

If anyone has any experience with this I would appreciate it. I guess what I want to know is how long she is likely to live with this condition. She doesn't appear to be sick in general and seems to be enjoying life so I don't want to euthanize her yet but what can I expect to have happen??

Beautiful eggs Laura. I've thought of letting my BC marans be one of the breeds I no longer work on for show. I have to cut back somewhere and get this feed bill beaten down to at least below $1,000 from it's current near $2,000

But I know I'll have to at least keep my darkest layers for the egg flock.
