Here is a pic off the internet of a juvenile Cooper's hawk:

We have one hunting in our backyard. It actually swooped me and the birds one day last week. Two days later, I went out early in the morning to let the chickens out. I always let the young ones out in the aviary first then give some sprouted seeds to the Bobwhite quail. Every one of the quail in the two big pens were frozen in place. I could have picked up any one of them. They didn't even move a muscle when I waved my hand in front of them. I walked out into the yard and there was that Cooper's hawk sitting up in our cork tree scoping out the yard. I chased him away and didn't let the chickens out in that part of the yard for quite a while after that. I have a new respect for my quail. The young chickens were just running around in the covered aviary while the hawk was there but the quail knew better!

I hope not to see any of those in my yard. I do have crows or ravens that hang around (not sure of the differences from a distance) that chase off bigger birds occasionally - as well as a few teeny birds that dive-bomb any predatory birds (and sometimes me) that get around their nests. Their loud CHEEP at the bottom of the dive lets me know to back away from the grapevines.. there is somebody in there.

I did have quite a few chickens starting to molt before I left so we will see what kind if eggs im getting when I get back. :-)

Ok Deb, are you saying that is NOT weird?

And that one is even homozygous for NN - so no bow-tie!

And I did specifically bring her to the fair, because she is my most naked showgirl. I thought the public would enjoy seeing her (and I can't begin to tell you how right I was about that one).

As an "all other variety", I certainly didn't enter her for what she could do at the show, but she is a nice bird if she were a recognized breed/variety, although her skin could be a little darker. She was just a sweetheart, a HUGE public relations bird for the breed. She stood quietly for the photos and petting and willingly ate bits of grain from people's hands.

Don't know if anyone watches Bar Rescue, but last night it was set in Vegas and they introduced a woman as the Tangueray Gin Ambassador. Your girl was the Show Girl Ambassador....does she have a consulate??

Hey all! Back from backpacking! It was AMAZING!

Our girls held in their eggs while we were gone. No eggs yet. They're 19 weeks old now.

Question:

Two of our roosters have no sickle feathers! They were there last week. Is it common for roos to pull other's tail feathers out? Will they grow back? Is this bad? The Orpington roo is the only one left with sickle feathers so I'm assuming he is the culprit....
