Here is a pic off the internet of a juvenile Cooper's hawk:

We have one hunting in our backyard. It actually swooped me and the birds one day last week. Two days later, I went out early in the morning to let the chickens out. I always let the young ones out in the aviary first then give some sprouted seeds to the Bobwhite quail. Every one of the quail in the two big pens were frozen in place. I could have picked up any one of them. They didn't even move a muscle when I waved my hand in front of them. I walked out into the yard and there was that Cooper's hawk sitting up in our cork tree scoping out the yard. I chased him away and didn't let the chickens out in that part of the yard for quite a while after that. I have a new respect for my quail. The young chickens were just running around in the covered aviary while the hawk was there but the quail knew better!

That's it. At first I thought " what is an owl doing out so early?" Then I realized the head was small. Then I realized I should do something besides admire how beautiful it is!!!
I love love love Showgirls!! I wouldn't mind having maybe 2 girls. hehe I have 2 Naked Necks and I think they are awesome sauce. And the fact that people shutter when they see them gives me sick pleasure. :P I personally find them pretty. But then again I like hairless cats even lol. This is what was picking off our chicks. :( Once they got passed 6 weeks old it stopped eating them for some reason. I am assuming we were/are dealing with younger hawks. I've heard the big adults will go after ducks and full grown chickens.
I did laugh when it went after my production red. 1/2 the size. Darn chicken hawk! But I still have two smaller trader joe chickes in with the big girls.... I had better practice my aim!

I had to run into town today. They are replacing a bridge we have to cross on the way in, it dawned on me when I was coming home-I never even noticed the smell of the asphalt they were laying. I'm so tired of smokey air! My sense of smell is gone.

We do too.  We watch as a (shrinking) family.   Daughter #2 was just hired to work in a similar situation, Eventing Barn, in Newton NJ.  Just about 35 minutes away from her sister!!  This is the best news for all of us.  Haven't decided when D2 is hitting the road but probably within a week or 10 days, then our son leaves for school on the 16th.   If you would have asked me if they would all be up and out by summer's end, even 2 weeks ago I would have said "Nope"  and now look!

Time for more chickens???

That is very exciting that they are so close together! I think is its DEFINITELY time for some new chicks! I have 5 young Seramas and one is already crowing so cute!

I was able to get the Pita Pintas to stay on the grass today so I took some pictures.

I have too many boys in this hatch. I have 5 boys and 4 girls. Unless this one turns into a Boy....

They are almost 7 weeks old and getting big!

For sure Girl!

I have to decide if this EO Marraduna Basque gets to be the main Breeding Rooster of if one of his brothers from the last hatch is the one. I will be able to keep three in Winters at the egg farm and it looks like I have 4 to choose from. One goes to Bayocum.

These are two pictures of the older Cockerel:

I don't even know them and I am so excited for them. Great that they are so close to each other.

They are very nice Ron. I am noticing close leg set on my basques here, maybe something to keep in mind when choosing your baby daddies.

I remember that from a recent discussion on the Heritage Large fowl thread. I also need to pick them up and check the keel and then the width of the back bones. Kim showed me a bit of that when I visited her and the New Heritage Dels from Kathyinmo. Those are amazing Delawares too.

Mr. Blosl says to get a lawn chair and watch them to see which ones draw your eye then look at those close up.

I hope I can do a good job with them
