California - Northern

It might. I suspect the ones pulling it out are doing so because they are "blood feathers" (new growth) and have a lot of protein. I know Blue Kote stops pecking if they see red - not sure if it will stop the pulling if they have become addicted to pulling those feathers. Is it just one bird - or is it a bunch of them?
Just one bird. I have started giving them higher protein treats such as more meal worms since I have a PILE of them so we will see if that helps. They just won't let these feathers grow back.

Yes and the 3 hens Are beautiful but the rooster was dead:(
Well that whole process was kind of stressful.

OH!! I placed at the Nevada County Fair in photography!

A portrait got second place and one of my chicken portraits (my avatar pic) got a third place! YAY!

Yay! Gotta picture of second place?

Today one of my Crele Penedesencas laid an egg. It is the second egg from the two of them. I am very happy to have Penedesenca eggs again!

I have missed them since Jane succumbed to her last Calamity.....

I had to take the picture while the egg was wet--It had a crazy amount of bloom on it. The egg weighs 38 Grams.

So with all that bloom was it a pink egg?

The bloom made it look white to gray. The Bloom on the Marraduna Basque hen egg made it look Pink to purple.

I was very nice looking.

Icelandics start laying between 5 and 6 months. They are my most consistent (and frustrating) layers. They are currently laying their eggs in an open shavings bag instead of the nesting boxes. They are extreme escape artists also. (Read my signature line)

hahaha. Don't know if you saw my post but I said how mine had led a revolt and spent the night in a walnut tree, out of my reach with three of their sisters. I really hope if they hide their eggs that they hide them where I can find them. They are 4 mos old but ol Ozzie has taken a shine to one of them. Fortunately she is FAST and he well..he is not. Do cockerels show interest normally in pre-ovulating hens?

Why oh why do people not have full sized frizzles????

Also this is a conversation I had with Tom last night. Can you help me out?

me: Beakface may get sick of being a mom by next week then we will have to have a light for the babies over night
T: She has been such a great mom why would she ditch them before they were ready? If chicks couldn't survive when their moms ditched them how did chickens ever survive?
me: Uhhhhhhhh she might not ditch them but if she does we will need the light
T: I have no problem with the light, it just seems non-adaptive
me: Good question, no clue let me run it by the chicken people.

So chicken people ...? Before people intervened would those chicks just sink or swim and that led to heartier landraces?

Since I started using the Birnsea Contact heater I have become convinced that chickens do not need to be as warm as we keep them. My last hatched chicks are 3 weeks old and are not using any heater. They are fine.

It's my understanding that egg producers have been trying to select against broodiness/being a good mom for hundreds of years, since broody = no egg production. so their modern tendency to stop looking after the chicks too early is an artifact of that selective breeding. wild chicken-anscestors likely did not have this problem.

They are all only about 15 weeks old so I will probably continue to dream about eggs. The dream was really silly too. I had gone in to a Denny's and asked for just a regular breakfast there. You know eggs, bacon, hash browns, etc. She told me they were out of eggs and that all of Northern California was out of eggs because of production problems of some sort! I thought to myself gosh I wish my chickens were laying eggs so I could at least have my breakfast!
