Happy for you! They should be good layers.
and hope you DH stays safe in the fire zone -- the area where my mom's place is (just east of the town of Groveland, mom's house is on an inholding surrounded by Forest Service land, just off of Hwy 120) never has any cell coverage! but from the news it sounds like the fire might have moved away from the highway & into wilder areas, she recognized some of her favorite backpacking spots on the maps...
I spoke with him last night and he is north of that area. He didn't know if that area had burned but thought the fire was right there. He's east of Tuolomne, clearing trees & brush from around homes. His dept fire rig is smaller with 4wd, so they get to do structure protection on some of the more remote and steep areas where the larger fire trucks can't go.
Not my grandbaby ( thank G-d) he is only 1 month. My baby who is really a toddler;-) two years old, is print to respitory problems. So I oiled him up. Oregano, breathe ( a blend), frankincense , lavender, on guard( a blend) and acv foot bath... He slept all night and now he is chasing the dog!

We have several friends on the rim fire setting back fires ( not sure what their called) so intense seeing our YOUNG men suited up fighting such am unpredictable force! Thankfully they are with seasoned confident firefighters. We received word our friends will be on location the full 14 days ....
Glad to hear that he's doing better! 14 days would be a double shift. My DH said that they send them home after 7 days.

My son-in-law is a firefighter also. He got off the Salmon fire after 8 days, to join us for one day of our family vacation in Fort Bragg. Then went home to his regular shift at Chico Fire and was called out to a fire near us several times but because they're having rolling brownouts daily in Chico he was unable to go. I keep waiting to hear he's going to the Rim fire. On the Salmon fire he was out of cell range for a few days. I think that's the hardest on my daughter, when she can't hear from him. Prayers to all the firefighters to stay safe.
With the size of this fire, I think all firefighters will be asked to go at some point. My son is with Woodland Fire, but he declined to go because he works at Enloe in Chico as a medic on his days off. Maybe your SIL knows him. He's kind of a smart a**.

I have a few of my original factory reds and barred rocks left. They're 3-4 years old. I lost 7 in the heat and now yesterday and this morning one of my barred rocks is puffed up and didn't come off the roost

is this the normal age for a factory layer breed or could something else be wrong with her?

Those are not known for their longevity. Can you put her somewhere by herself and cool, to keep an eye on her? Give her some vitamins/electrolytes in her water.

she's already gotten confirmation from the officials up there that two of the five houses on their inholding have burned to the ground, two that are adjacent to hers (it was also confirmed in the media, as of sunday night the LA Times was reporting that two homes had been burned on Packard Canyon Road, that's her road) -- but no one can confirm anything about the condition of her place. she's vigilant in maintaining a defensible space around her house, and that saved it once before from a wildfire that the fire fighters were able to turn just before it reached her propane tank -- but with this huge of a fire, who knows.

fortunately, she knows there's nothing she can do about it at this point, and so has a fairly good attitude -- just waiting for things to calm down enough to get more news.

my two Amelias (who came from eggs from Deann, but were raised by Ron) are also my most skittish of my adult birds -- i've always chalked it up to their disappointment in not being able to stay at Ron's place...
Being shy of people is a Penedesenca trait. They are not aggressive at all and they do go by me to get the treats. One of the Amelias is broody and she lets me pick her up to collect the eggs each day. They are enjoyable.

The wind blew the door open on the top of the run yesterday on the pen that the UofA pullets share with the two Crele Pene pullets. The Crele Pullets stayed in the pen but the UofA pullets flew on out and started foraging in the back yard. I caught two of them in the late afternoon but they are very fast so I left the other two out until dusk. A splash pullet was ready to go into the pen but the Blue one was not there. I finally found her hanging out in the layer pen with the big girls. She had flown over the fence to get to them.

That is the easiest integration this year LOL!

Anyone have a recommendation on the best way to apply Blue Kote? I am going to put some on my Polish chickens head because they just keep plucking the new growth. However; I have seen some casualties of using Blue Kote and hope to not be wearing it for weeks to come myself.

Given the length of the surrounding crest feathers it is conceivable I won't be able to get her to hold still and will get it all over her crest feathers and when she moves her head erratically (because you know I am killing her at this point) I am afraid she will splash it all over me and everything else....... Walking in to the office with lots of little purple dots all over my face may be difficult to explain and convince them I am not contagious.

Maybe a targeted spray bottle? A cotton ball? I know you chicken experts have done this already and can save me the learning curve.

I would put On some rubber dishwashing gloves Or if you don't have them just some plastic bags, And use a cotton ball. I would also wrap the chicken in a towel

For those of you who ship eggs or have received shipped eggs:
What is the best packing method you have seen? Or what method do you use that you have found works the best?

I have never had an egg break the way I pack until last week! Last week three of the boxes were crushed. I don't know if any packing method could have saved the eggs. :(

When his coop is finished I am thinking that one of the girls I put with him will be Willa. She is gentle and I have never seen her peck him. Contrary to the Amelia experience of others she has never ended up in a tree so I think she will be ok with his low lying coop configuration. She will be able to roost higher outside of the coop but the coop itself will be low to the ground so he can get into it.

Got egg #3 last night it was quite a bit darker and a little bigger than the first two. Darker for sure than my hatchery Del eggs. She is so much Bigger than my original girls already and just beautiful.
