Can you ship live adult chickens? Is it insanely pricey?

Usually $40-$65 for chicks and around $50-$80 for adults

I had five adult campines shipped to me from New York to CA. It cost $140, including the cost of the shipping box.

I've had other adult birds shipped to me about a half dozen times (ducks, chickens) from a few different places, but I don't remember the exact cost, but less than above.

There have been some posts about USPS charging more now. There may have been a price increase recently.

OMG im banging my head against the wall here. chickenmamma sent me the number of the lady i got showgirls from in stockton.. and I lost the email! GAAAAA! how could I do that????

Only way I have been able to stop them is to put them in a pen without nesting boxing until they don't show signs of broodiness anymore.

If you are going to give her hatching eggs, let her sit where she chooses. Mark the eggs with a sharpie - I draw a line around the center of the egg so I can see the mark without disturbing the broody too much. Remove any unmarked eggs that get added to her nest daily. Then when the babies hatch, move her and the babies to an area where they can have some privacy. (I have a broody area in my coop) I do this for about a week, then let them out with the flock. (they are visible in the coop for that whole week)

Hmm... I really have a tiny coop, and don't know that I could find a nursery space. But I wish I could let her have what she wants!

Alpine if you want to let her raise some chicks I have a hatch coming up. But I need the chicks back when she is done with them. I'm just a sucker for little hens that want babies.

Hmm... now this is an idea... how would it work? you bring babies over and we sneak them under her? And when they are a little bigger, they move back in with you? That solves my problem that I don't have space for more chickens, but I still worry I don't have enough space for her to raise babies separate from the other girls... maybe we can chat separately.

If you want to break her, a wire bottomed cage, up off the ground works well. The more exposure to sunlight (not direct) will help regulate her hormones more quickly. This advice came from an experienced poultryman, and it worked 3 times this year for my very determined Ameraucana EE from Chickee. Took 3 days each time, but I let her go in the nest box at night because she kept jumping off the roost after dark and finding it herself.


Cage in the shade under the apricot tree. The other girls would come visit and try to help her eat her much needed food. She was so thin. I'd let her out about an hour before sunset for a dust bathing session, and she'd put herself away in the coop for the night. All better now and finally laying eggs for the first time since mid-spring.

I found a cage for her. I set it up in the house, but haven't moved her into it yet... I didn't want to put it outside because of predators at night, but maybe I can let her sleep in the coop at night? Thanks for the pictures, it helps me understand what can work. I'll try this for a while, and see if it breaks her.

Yes, we would leave them for 3-4 weeks. depending on how long it takes for her to wean them. Unless she is a hen that is VERY low in the pecking order and the others pick on her and thus her chicks, it should be ok, silkies stay fairly small. I'd just bring over some food and corid when I bring them so you don't have to deal wiht baby stuff. You and she can enjoy the babies but not have to wonder what to do with them when they are weaned.

I'll have to check google calendar to see when the next batch is due. I have the best luck if they have been sitting for 10 days or more.

My grandmother used to work in a sausage factory when she was young. They would clean out the "casing" and process them for whatever sausage they were making. Apparently they took a few home because during after work hours they were used as a condom! Indirectly that is part of the reason I am here today. They don't work very well as a contraceptive device.

I am going down to see my mother tomorrow in LA. She is in a locked facility down there and we are trying to get her up here with us, but it hasn't been an easy road. Her life in this facility is not very pleasant and she does have some mental issues that arose very late in life. My family and I are of the opinion she can have whatever her hearts desire. She isn't going to get better and where she lives isn't a place that one would want to live voluntarily. If eating chocolate and Pringles and Diet Coke are what she wants then she can have them.

Now I am sure if she was still a functioning member of society and our family I would think differently, but as it is, I am happy to do whatever brings her a little bit of joy.

Well that is a new one lol.
