California - Northern

Sorry, I don't have any photos of the Splash Barnies as I sold them all as juveniles. I only keep the DLBB for breeding but Splash does occasional pop up. I will get photos next time so I can atleast have a picture for reference.

I got a call from someone today looking for an Adult Cream Legbar rooster. I don't have any available but I told him I would ask here for him. He lives in LA. He is willing to pay for the bird and shipping. If you have a bird, please PM me and I will give you his Tel # so you can contact him directly.

Thanks

Hi everyone sorry I've been off the grid lately been really down in the dumps emotionally ugh. I'm feeling better and just noticed that one of my EEs that I got from Candy is missing. I searched everywhere for her but gone without a trace. No feathers or blood anywhere. I looked over the neighbors fence but didn't see any sign of carnage. I think she's too young to be broody on a hidden nest.

I am so sorry to hear that! My buff x blue wheaten Ameraucanas are super broody, so maybe she has a nest somewhere. I hope you are able to find her. If not, I still have one full sister to her that is a little younger and hasn't started laying yet that you can have

Flowers I forgot to answer about the quail! If its got dark stripes its Italian. If they are light its Manchurian. If there are none it is a Texas a and m. I don't think I have the cages set up for tans however.

I have a 4 day old Serema mario has named the evil one. I have quail hatching now and he put them in with the tiny babies as usual. It tried to eat them! It was dragging it around by its foot trying to do a victory lap.

I will call it spitfire!

Or Canibal maybe.....?

That is sad. My farm friend has a group of Cornish x that should have been processed a few weeks ago. Some of them have gotten so big that their legs just give out and they die. Tomorrow is processing day. The good thing is that my friend really wants to raise dual purpose chickens that are sustainable and this final experience with Cornish X has made her determined to make it happen.

Yes, Sustainable is the key word here. Kudos to your friend for choosing Heritage Dual Purpose over Cornish X.

I personally don't think having birds shipped year after year is sustainable. In an ideal world we should all be able to raise our own Dual Purpose birds where the girls go into the layer flock and the boys get processed. Most of the "dual purposed" birds from the hatcheries are not dual purpose at all. They are production birds. If they were Dual Purpose birds the roosters would not be so darn hard to give away.

I have been reading up on the LF Heritage Bird thread. If anyone has not been there... it is enlightening. I am sooo happy to see many dedicated breeders focusing on breeding dual purpose heritage breeds back to their intended purpose "Dual"

Had fun taking pictures of some of my chickens today

Here are my bantam Polish chicks that are a few weeks old. Looks like I have 3 boys and 2 girls (on the left) by the shape of their crests. They are so goofy

I love my Polish!

Some of my Golden Cuckoo Marans pullets were milling around in the chicken house today making I want to lay an egg noises! Can't wait for my first chocolate eggs!!

Can you move the mobile coop with her in it? At night maybe? I'd cover the opening to her box leave her in it and move it. Then see if she sticks and give her eggs.

Have you thought about getting some bantam cochins? Apparently you just leave them a pile of eggs and they can't resist. They use them in the peacock industry. They started with silkies but they did not sit on demand as well.
I could, but the eggs would break from all the bouncing the coop does when it's moved. Even go off roading in a travel trailer?

It's not a good environment for brooding or raising chicks.
No more breeds for me!

I've had good luck with cat litter boxes (new of course) as nests. When they go broody, I move the whole thing and they don't seem to mind.
Good idea. I have a crate in there for that purpose. Trouble is, the broody hen likes the nest box instead.

I considered going to that until I saw that one of the sponsers is the California Department of Food & Agriculture and one topic going to be covered is state regulations. I don't need the government knowing any more about me than it already does!
I read that and had two thoughts. #1~ Isn't it nice of them to try and help all these chicken owners for free. Even give them a free lunch. #2~ There is no such thing as a free lunch. They are gathering names of people who want to sell eggs so that they can keep an eye on them, or fine them, etc.

I am very sad this morning.
I'm so sorry. I didn't know that Freedom Rangers would grow like Cornish x.
If you would be interested in a male for those hens, I have one of those Dels that was at that class. He is the friendliest, yet not one of the best for my breeding project. I'd love to find him a home where he could live as a rooster.
