Chiqita Thanks for the inadvertent advice to me. I tried moving my broody to break her this summer but she was determined. Never thought of doing it after I relented and gave her eggs...as Ali would say, "Doh!"

With the insane amount of broody girls I had, I think I learned every trick in the book but how to break a silkie... at least I still have my wide load marans and little broody hatchery silkes for my fixes.

I just got through moving my out of the coop broody CL pullet and she was sitting under the wood pile on 11 non-fertile blue eggs! I put her in a nest box inside the run and gave her 2 fake eggs & 2 of the ones she has been sitting on. If I can get her to stay there, I am going to give her 3 fertile eggs that I got at the farm.

deann I'm sorry for your loss. The people I know who have meat birds as pets make them run around and free range and do NOT give 24/7 acess to feed. If they graze they can live. Or at least I have people i know who have done it with cornish and BBS turkeys, the ultimate eaters who you need to make jog every day, lol. But even then its about 2 years tops. SO Id imagine the freedoms can live longer?

chickee your cuckoo Marans rooster has a very nice tail and comb! you rarely see them so low! Almost all teh MArans I see in the US have tails that are too high for the standard. That is at the other end of the spectrum, and looks very handsome.

I found another dog run that is short for silkies and grow outs. Now I jsut need to find 4 more in panels for teh grand plan! did I write about the rand plan? I don't remember...

My friend (Harris5) has been working on her own line of Golden Cuckoo Marans for a couple of years and has made really great progress. I am hoping he will improve my hen line.

I think it's hilarious she barely started laying and went broody already? When I went out to take her picture she growled at me lol. I guess I have to break another broody

eggs aren't fertile of course.

2 silkies!! They are fantastic therapy chickens. A pair a roo and a hen so they can see the interactions.

I'm think more along OEGB lines. Silkies on red clay in the rain - translation; wet cotton candy. We also get cold here sometimes, not unusual for us to have a week straight with 28° as the daytime high.
