Do any if you have a broody hen you'd like to rehome? I have some Jersey Giants and Barred Rocks that are coming of age;). I would like to try to hatch some of their chicks the "the old fashioned way". The Giants are not exactly known for their broodiness.

I live in Turlock.
Hi there, I have some broody bantam mixed girls I would love to find another home where they can be allowed to sit on eggs and I don't have to throw them off the nest every time I want to collect the eggs. They aren't broody right now because I put them in with 4 roosters (that usually fixes broody) and two LF mean hens... They are small - so wouldn't be able to hatch a bunch of eggs - but they are very fierce mommies. They were hatched by a broody too. They are black and white, a cross of a Bantam Light Brahma and who knows what...

I am on the search for a few laying hens or close to laying hens.. I am near Folsom/Placerville area. Does anyone know where I can find some? We had an animal get 3 of our layers and then our chicks from the feed store this year turned out to be 5 out of 7 roos :( I really would like to not have to go the chick route right now since we just completed it, so no heat lamp would be ideal ;)
If you want bantams.. I have the two broody girls above (who are laying now - who knows for how much longer) or I am thinking of selling my pair of Partridge Wyandotte Bantams and their two daughters. The one daughter looks pure, the other is a mix.

This is the chick that was half out of shell. She hasn't done much since I brought her in. I have kept the paper towel over the membrane.
The desk lamp seems to be keeping them between 91-93 degrees.
I am picking up some poly-vi-sol just in case. I don't want to be stuck without it.
I wish I could pull all the eggs from under her.

Looks like it may not quite be ready to hatch if there is bleeding at all. Just let her do her thing don't force her. Sorry you're going through this:(

Is the yolk absorbed? How does the navel look. If it all looks good, then you should be able to get the shell off now.

I am not sure, I have been half afraid I will injure her trying to see.

I am running over to my uncles to pick up his incubator in a bit. I will check her over once I get back, and investigate further.
At least this way I can make sure no more chicks will get thrown out in the middle of the night, and I might be able to get a little sleep.

That is a good plan!

Getting the chick out of the shell is in the guide to assisted hatching in my signature line a the bottom of this post.

Looks like she squished the egg. I had 2 squished babies that made it just fine, so there is hope. Once the chick gets some strength, you'll probably be able to slip it back under her. (and dry and fluffy) It's in their instincts to kill the weak. I hope your broody does well with the others.

I have a broody Marans girl that has been in a nest. None of my other Marans will lay! There are 12 hens in with her and two nest boxes. they will only lay in one nest box and it's the one that she is hunkered down in. :( Should I put her in a kennel or something?
