thanks! i went out & took some photos, thought i'd share here:

jack the birchen roo, at 24 weeks

maria, also 24 weeks -- she's the one who just started laying this past week

gertrude, who is 12 weeks

her sister clemantine, who is not birchen, but all black except for a faint ring of orangey-copper around her neck

blue the isbar, who is 26 weeks -- he only just started to crow this week, developing much slower than the marans

fern (black) and mabel (blue), who are both isbar/marans crosses (hatched from eggs from Miss Molly, as did Blue) -- they haven't laid anything yet, but are starting to show interest in the nest boxes, can't wait to see what their eggs look like!

I need to get some yard work done now--and then fire up the smoker for Smoked Pita Pinta!

I have two pullets. I am not breeding them and will be focusing on the Fogel Reds like you have. They are nice pullets though. The tails need more black in them and they are not quite long enough. They do have a nice shape to them

Happy Veterans Day, to you too, Ron! Thank you for the photos, and yes, they are a bit shorter in length, and can see the difference easily. I am "very" happy with my RIR. hens from you. They are beautiful, and looking forward to breeding them. The cockerel is huge, and very busy chasing all the hens. Unfortunately for him, made the big mistake of wooing the adult hens who were annoyed, and chased him back with fury..It was too funny to see him run for his life. He has been love crazed since he started to crow. When are you planning to breed yours? I was thinking of waiting until they are about a year old so they would be mature enough. Do you think that is a good time? Or should they be older? I should prepare some of the pumpkins as well. I bought 14 large pumpkins for the chickens, they ate the seeds, but, will not even touch the rest of it. For some strange reason, neither of my chickens will eat anything orange in colour, not even if I mix it with other things. Lual

Some chickens really do not like orange. My SG Dorking boy Corwin hated the orange lawnmower. It was very funny.

Roosters are so funny when they go all Mrs Robinson and get scolded.

MY chickens are bad today! We finally got a bid to redo our countertops and are getting ready to have surfaces in our kitchen again!

I am custom making the countertops of ikea butcher block, stained with India Ink. After a week of having ink problems, Im FINALLY waterloxing the boards( its not good to breath it while its open so have to do it in the semi open so no one is breathing it) . The chickens are MADLY curious about whats going on in the porch! They are not usually allowed on the porch, but vonnie sneaks in to lay on occasion. Today she took Orlando through her secret hole to admire my butcher block.

They decided to have sweet homogony on my new counters!!!! So I now have a faint image of orlando feet and vonnie butt on the surface. Luckily it is going to be the bottom side.

I have heard of breaking in a new counter, floor or house, but I didn't know chickens had that tradition as well! I wonder if that will be one of those things you are supposed to disclose if you sell....

So my neighbor from up the street came up to me today and asked me to take in one of her chickens. It's at the bottom of the pecking order and the other birds have pecked half her feathers off in the last few weeks. When I last saw her, she had such beautiful plumage and today she could easy contend in the Worst Molt contest, if only she were just molting. Poor thing is hiding in their coop and refusing to leave the roost. I suspect it may be because they rebuilt their chicken run and the birds now have half the space. They'd like to see if she'd fare better with us.

I told her to check and see if she had been vaccinated for Mareks when they got her as a chick a year ago, and to check for mites too. We have room for her, but I know some folks believe in the safety of a closed flock.

So taking her in: good idea or bad idea?

vaccinated and un vaccinated for mareks chickens can be mixed. There is a two week rule to wait after just vaccinating them but you are past that.

She needs to be quarantined from your flock for two weeks. Dust her, worm her and get her some vitamins and high protein feed. Some of the feathers will come back in and some will wait until the next molt.

She needs you to help her get better!

I have been very happy with it. We used one as a temporary counter over the new cabinets for the past 2 years, and it still looks great. And you can refinish and sand them at will if you have any oh cr**P moments . I got a mostly black with tourmaline granite to go with it over the peninsula bar. The economy of the butcher block let me go hog wild on the granite. I'm really hoping we have it all running by Christmas! We have been using broken old laminated countertops on the old cabinets for about a year since we had to replace the wall behind the countertops. It was one of those simple projects that became not simple fast, lol.
Now If I can just keep the chickens away from them for the next 5 days we are good! ( assuming I get my extra waterlox this week...)

I'm glad you are leading the New Years hatch Ron. I suggested you, since you participate in hatchalongs, are a seasoned hatcher ( so you can offer help) and most importantly, you are detail oriented. I think you will do a great job.
