California - Northern

You guys should check out drip irrigation products dept at Hard ware stores...look for these misters:

http://www.mrdrip.com/microfoggers.htm

Get the parts, hook it to your hose, and there is even a timer that has batteries that you can program (like an electrical timer) ((hooks to the hose faucet)) and the water will come on, and mist for however long you like, and shut off automatically.
We strung these things throughout Mulberry trees in the pens when we lived down there.I
t worked great !
If you do not know how, or what parts to get, just ask a hardware geek/clerk to help you out.

Hope this helps !

Trying to get in the habit of offering my produce scraps to the chickens. I toss them in the garbage without thinking. What a waste! So today I had leftover ears of corn (that I shaved the corn off of) and they are having fun pecking off the little kernels I missed. Plus I took the leftover zucchini bits and steamed them and gave them those too. They surprisingly liked those as well. By offering them produce scraps- does it interfere too much with their protein intake from their feed? (since all my chickens are aged 5 weeks to 4 months and still growing)
I can't even tell you how many times since we've had chickens that I've had to dig in the trash because I forget to keep the scraps for them. I'm so wired to just waste the food.. I have to remember I have chickens (and worms) to feed!

wow I have gotten rid of all the chickens I had wanted to in 2 days

plus a icelandic rooster I did not want to give up but I wanted to keep Curly my avatar plus the little white icelandic chick ( rooster ) that I saved with the hurt leg.

minus this week
The 2 campines ( hen and roo)
wynadotte
Black Ameraucana Rooster
young Icelandic Rooster
Crele Hamburg Rooster

now I have room for more icelandic's and Penedesenca
Here is the Icelandic Rooster I am keeping for breeding.
Wow that was super quick! Good for you!

We got one at osh for 10 bucks I think that does both and is pretty good. they take some, ( not a whole ton) of abuse . Its blue adn digital and has humidity on the bottom and temp at the top. Ok, found the **** thing, tis called acu rite
I just got the Acurite digital thermometer/hygrometer today in the mail. I'll be using it in my incubator for now (for the quail eggs.) When I get the chicks next week, it's going in their brooder with the Ecoglow just to make sure they're warm. There were so many of them to choose from but everyone seems to like this particular brands theremometers.

assuming it is ok but can you mix save a chick with the apple vinegar?
I've been told it's ok to mix both kinds of Save-A-Chick (electrolites and probiotics) with the apple cider vinegar.

We are awesome!

I read about a new way addicts are making meth. The chemicals go into a 2 liter soda bottle and is shaken to cause the chemical reaction. If things go wrong, fires occur.

The article said a high percentage of burns at emergency rooms are caused by this. People sit in cars and etc.

I am relieve to hear that you and the chickens are all ok.

Ron
Good heavens! Those people should get themselves some chickens or something to keep busy and out of trouble. What's the saying about "idle hands....." ?
Actually didn't get to it this weekend. I roasted my turkey last night and guess what I forgot to do after it cooled down? Put it away. :( I feel like such a ditz. The cake will be made tonight to cover for the fact that I am not feeding them all roasted chicken. Hope it works!

My mom used to talk about (when she was young) how turkey or even roast chicken was never put in the icebox (not enough room), just left out on the counter covered with a towel. There would even be stuffing in the turkey! No one ever got sick, and this was in warm So.Cal too. I'd be leery of trying that now, though. I wonder if germs are worse now or if we're just more paranoid.

My grandpa live through some things that many didn't survive -scarlet fever and whooping cough were two (in addition to the days old room temp turkey!). Maybe folks were just made of tougher stuff then.

Tell us how the cake comes out!

So glad the fire didn't spread. Having gone through the fires of 2008 here in Paradise I know how scary it is to have fire so close. Firefighters are angels!

I remember those fires. We had smoke all the way down here in Santa Rosa! Hope you weren't affected.

Scary few moments this afternoon.

Neighbor's house. Has been empty for a few months.
Luckily, volunteer fire dept is less than a quarter mile away. Very quick response.

This was the view from our backyard.

Two Cal Fire planes also sent out to safeguard the dry hill across the street. So much tall grass!!

These guys more than earned their keep today. 94 in the shade. Both were beet red when masks and helmets came off. Over half the house destroyed, but fire did not spreadl, even with huge Monterey pines right near.
Kudos to Bennett Valley Fire Dept. and all other firefighters!

Wow that was a close call! I can't believe how near you were to it. Poor firefighters. I couldn't imagine wearing such heavy equipment during these hot days! I'm glad you guys are all safe!

wow up most of the night. Crazy dog

we had insane weather last night up here in the higher foothills. at least 4 seperate thunder and lightning storms and periods of intense rain. Now very cool breezy and you can hear thunder in the distance
This weather needs to make up it's mind! Thunder and lightning still scares me, even as an adult.

I live on the coast. We deal with worms more often though, so no place is perfect. (Did I mention all the tourists?)

"What kind of bread is the ice cream sandwich on?"
"Does the Mocha Almond Fudge ice cream have almonds in it?"
lau.gif
(I heard that at an ice cream place several miles up)
OMG what kind of tourists do you get?! LOL

Tell me about it, I had four dogs freaking out from the thunder. Including a 140# Great Dane that was desperate to crawl into bed so we could protect her. Between her and the three Border Collies running in circles until 1:00, it was an Ambien kind of night!

Yay, I am so looking forward to the cooler weather for coop-in day.

No, I have birds entered next weekend. On Sat night and Sunday morning, I was judging the dog portion of the Small Animal Master Showmanship competitions. On Sunday afternoon, I was running the Cavy Knowlege Bowl. I've been working with 4H/FFA kids for decades.

Next weekend I get to be the competitor.

Yes, the Open Poultry always has the last weekend of the Fair, with one specialty show. I think this year it's dark Cornish.

Deb
Good luck at your show next weekend!

Yuck! Speaking of meth, I just finished the show Breaking Bad on Netflix. Very interesting show!

Hi Megan,

The thermometer won't work with the eco glow.

The chicks push up onto the ecoglow to warm up. When they are warm, they will move away. The Brooder is not heated by the ecolglow so you do not need to measure the temperature. All you have to do is make sure the light is on at the top of the eco glow and that the black surface that the chicks touch is warm. You start with the eco glow at a low level and raise it as they get bigger. Think about a mother hen sitting on her chicks. The room does not get warmer just the chicks.

It makes taking care of the chicks very easy.

Back to the grind! Anyone else wish weekends were longer? Better yet, what if we only had weekends forever? haha I went to Cheryl's ranch (The Omelet Ranch) this morning with the kids. We fed and watered all of the chickens and collected eggs. It was so fun! We get to go there 2-3 times a week on the days Cheryl & Debi can't make it. Because of what I've learned here, I have specific shoes that I'll only wear to her ranch. That way I don't have to worry about bringing anything back to my coop or vice-a-versa. I guess this information IS sinking in after all!

Thank you all for the information on apple cider vinegar. It sounds like there are good benefits to adding it to water.. even if it's only to keep the water free of bacteria.

Ron was nice enough to pick me up a couple bags of the King Brand feed this weekend. My older chickens will start on that next week when I get the food (and the new little fuzzies that are hatching this weekend!!)

This weather has been pretty hot lately. I'm glad you guys were able to get misters for the chickens! The Basque's are VERY heat hardy. It's nice to not worry about them too much when the heat comes around. We turn the misters on for them anyways and they love it but I think I could get away with no misters if I had to. I'm sorry to hear that people here have lost chickens this summer due to the heat. That would be devastating to come out and find a dead over-heated chicken :-(

Does anyone have natural remedies they use to keep their chickens worm-free? Now I'm paranoid about worms. Haha

Hope everyone has a great day today! I plan to :)

Quote: The Article also said that the chemicals get into the eyes when the bottle explodes and cause chemical burns. Often the addicts do not tell the truth about what caused the fire and the burns delaying proper treatment. Often this leads to blindness.

It is crazy what addicted people will do.

Yes, chickens are much better therapy.

Good Luck! What kind of breeds are you entering? I'll look for you and your birds....hopefully with some ribbons! Do you think it would be better for my son and me to go on Saturday to watch the judging? We might not get to hear anything from the judges but we could see what is SQ by seeing which birds get the ribbons. The breeder I buy my silkies from is showing about 14 of her silkies. Some of them are siblings of my flock, so I'm excited to see them. We planned to go Friday, but maybe Saturday would be a better experience. What do you think?

I feel really bad that my son didn't get to do showmanship at the Sac Co fair. It was my fault for not registering in time. We are in the Citrus Heights 4H. He was in the Poultry Project, Dog Obedience and Rabbit Project....oh and I taught the Sewing Project last year.

I sure appreciate people like you, so dedicated to teaching kids about animals.

Thanks CaliChick! I've entered Campine, a Lakenvelder, a NH, a pair of BCM and in bantams, a buff Brahma and a BR. They're all still a little young to be competitive (changing feathers at the moment), but it will be fun anyway and my DH's first show.

Judging doesn't start until Sat. morning, so if you want to see any of the results, Sat afternoon or Sunday would be a better choice. On the other hand, less people on Friday...............it's a judgement call.

And thanks, I've been involved in 4H since about '88, it's a great program.
