wow up most of the night. Crazy dog

we had insane weather last night up here in the higher foothills. at least 4 seperate thunder and lightning storms and periods of intense rain. Now very cool breezy and you can hear thunder in the distance

i have some friends visiting, and last night (here in sonoma co.) we could see incredibly-distant horizon flashes to the east, and this morning there are tidbits of old thunderstorm clouds passing overhead from the east... it must have been wild in the foothills!

best,
laura

Scary few moments this afternoon.

Neighbor's house. Has been empty for a few months.
Luckily, volunteer fire dept is less than a quarter mile away. Very quick response.

This was the view from our backyard.

Two Cal Fire planes also sent out to safeguard the dry hill across the street. So much tall grass!!

These guys more than earned their keep today. 94 in the shade. Both were beet red when masks and helmets came off. Over half the house destroyed, but fire did not spreadl, even with huge Monterey pines right near.
Kudos to Bennett Valley Fire Dept. and all other firefighters!

Oh wow! It's that season again. Glad nobody got hurt!

OMG, it has been hot, hot, hot. I just got home from spending the day at the State Fair. I had an event I was judging this morning at 7:30 and another event I was running at 2:00 in the afternoon. In between, it was miserable. I tried to spend as much time in AC as possible, but you have to go from one building to another (and back to the parking lot).

Yikes, HOT

I hope the weather has cooled down some for the poultry show next weekend.

Deb
It looks like the temperatures will be in the low 90's for next weekend.

I can't wait for the adult open poultry competition. I'm going on Friday, July 27th....high of 91*!

My DH and son went yesterday (very hot walking around that blacktop)...but they wanted to see the RV Demolition Derby.

Deb, are you a judge or do you have birds entered?

Very crazy lightening storm, although we had very little rain with it. We were up too, worrying about it starting a fire.

The temperature here is always in the 50's-60's. Never 70 degrees though!

Does the State Fair have an adult poultry showmanship competition?

Wow, how scary!
I recall a absolutely HUGE lighting storm in 2008. The whole sky was a gloomy gray mat. I remember driving home and there was a fire just on the hill. It started on the Solstice and went for about a week of fire and lighting. Nobody got hurt, thanks to our firefighters.

My DH and son got home late from the State fair last night and told me they saw lightning. Then, my husband woke me up early this morning and said I was missing the "Lightning Show"! Well, it didn't register on my brain because I went right back to sleep without seeing a thing.

I'm glad everyone is safe. And, a little jealous of the rain you got in the hills, COOPER! I'm from the east (Ohio) and I really miss the rain............

JEALOUS! Where are you located?

Does the State Fair have an adult poultry showmanship competition? Yes, it is 27-29. I think Deb said in a previous post that they judge on Saturday.....Hmmm, maybe I should go Saturday instead of Friday?

Quote: I live on the coast. We deal with worms more often though, so no place is perfect. (Did I mention all the tourists?)

"What kind of bread is the ice cream sandwich on?"
"Does the Mocha Almond Fudge ice cream have almonds in it?"

(I heard that at an ice cream place several miles up)

Was that from the same person? I hope "they" were kidding!

Ugh-worms! You're right, there is no perfect place to raise chickens. We just have to adapt to their special needs where-ever we live. At least it's cooler on the coast. I want to move to the mountains or out in the country (with lots of trees). But then I guess there would be a lot of predators that I needn't worry about here in my urban back yard.

Tell me about it, I had four dogs freaking out from the thunder. Including a 140# Great Dane that was desperate to crawl into bed so we could protect her. Between her and the three Border Collies running in circles until 1:00, it was an Ambien kind of night!

Yay, I am so looking forward to the cooler weather for coop-in day.

No, I have birds entered next weekend. On Sat night and Sunday morning, I was judging the dog portion of the Small Animal Master Showmanship competitions. On Sunday afternoon, I was running the Cavy Knowlege Bowl. I've been working with 4H/FFA kids for decades.

Next weekend I get to be the competitor.

Does the State Fair have an adult poultry showmanship competition?

Yes, the Open Poultry always has the last weekend of the Fair, with one specialty show. I think this year it's dark Cornish.
