HAHAHA! HAAHAH HAHAHAHAHAH.......... hahaha...... uhhhh.... I will stop laughing when ALL my hens go broody at once. But, I must admit I love broodies. almost all my non marans non showgirls hens are rescues from people who didn't want broody chickens.. or hatchery stock, haha. I've given 6 hens chicks so far this year, and my first one is eyeing the nest again with a fair bit of hope. She tried to sit on her 10 week old chicks instead yesterday ( 2 left) but that didn't go so well...

My Barred Rocks have shown no indication of Broodiness. I do have a Cherry Egger RIR that sits on the nest for a long time and sqwaks at me when I lift the nest lid. She keeps getting off of the nest though.

I am really hoping the Dorking will go Broody. She is17 months old or so.

What is your secret?

hooray, home from meeting Cheryl at the Omelet Ranch (thanks, Cheryl!) with my two lovely silver penciled rocks -- haven't quite decided on names yet, but trying to get them settled in inside their separate-but-equal pen within the coop's run:




they are just about the same size as the other three (daisy the australorp is still a good bit smaller), but with HUGE feet -- and so far one of the rocks has had a few through-the-bars stand-offs with one of the bossy marans (ethel), but no major trouble. they're so wonderfully beautiful!!

I have a hatchery girl as well. She was one of my originals and still gives me 6 eggs a week at 3 1/2 years old.

The secret is tell everyone you want a broody - then you'll get a lot of them. I'm on broody #4 right now this year, and my 3 1/2 year old Production Red of all chickens is acting broody.

I have so many broodies in my HQ egg flock, that the girls still laying are using the floor of the coop. No room in the nests. My BO has literally turned into bones, skin and feathers. She refuses to leave the nest for more than a few minutes per day. She has been sitting now for 6+ weeks. I'm going to have to set up a broody buster cage for her. The other three boxes have a RIR, a cuckoo marans and a BA. No one has eggs and I have no plans to give them any!

I haven't kept up on this thread recently I guess....................... It was suggested to me that I post about my experience with Delawares. I live in Turlock which is in the hot interior valley of Callifornia. I have lost no Delawares to the heat, grown birds or chicks. They are reliable egg layers & I loved the fact that they went all winter long with no lights & kept laying. I don't use lights with my outside birds. Lotsapaints lives in Paso Roble that is south of here & even hotter & she raises delawares too. That's where mine originally came from. They make great meat birds too. I have processed them for myself. Delicious flavor. They are one of my strongest breeds for hatching eggs.They pop right out, on time, & full of vigor. I incubate my eggs & don't leave them with the hens to hatch. They have been one of my favorite breeds right from the beginning. I have sold many, many chicks. Up til now my Dellis have been my winter layers. This year I hatched out Dominiques because my research showed them listed as winterlayers too. We will see if they can do as well.....LOL
