My Australorp died of a Mold plug in the lungs. It might be Aspergillus but they are waiting for lab results to tell for sure.

None of the others are showing symptoms so she may have been immune deficient.

I need to ask Hupp if he has had problems like this with them.

Well shoot Ron. at least you know...I have never heard of that but is it the same kind of black mold thing that can make humans so sick? I will be interested/curious to learn what Mr Hupp has to say

Yes, it is the same thing. I do not know where she would have gotten a big blast of spores though. I will be checking out the chicken hutch and applying Litter Life to make sure I do not have it in the sand there.

I don't think I have any rotting wood there and the auto water system does not leak. The hutch is made of Red Wood too.

weird...Hupp Farms is in AZ right and these were shipped as eggs not chicks?? That's a mystery but would a lack of immunity to mold because it wasn't a part of your environment be passed on to a chick? That doesn't seem likely and Woodland is definitely pretty darned arid. Sorry you lost her. Hope everyone else stays healthy.

@Happy Chooks My chickens are so much happier with their warmish drinks in the a.m. Last night I stored the waterers in the coops which was helpful. This morning I used the kettle to thaw and add to their water and they were very pleased with me.

What do you guys think about keeping my escape artists in their own covered run during the day then cooping them with everyone else during this cold spell? The only shelter in their day time run is a dog kennel and I don't feel like it is warm enough for night...maybe if I cover it with a sleeping bag and leave the front open for ventilation? Also there are no roosts in the kennel but I could rig something in there that might make them happy. I feel like I have been totally confusing them about where to go to bed and I should probably just keep them in the day pen. Thoughts?

I haven't been following this story, but if you want them to go in somewhere for the night you need to keep them in one place for a while.

You pamper your chickens so much.

I still have some cull roosters in that pen made with wire panels. Open on all sides with a roof. They are fine. Not even any frost damage on their combs. I just break the ice in their water pan each morning and add more water from the hose. I'm a big meany. They are hoping to run away and go live with you!

For your dog kennel coop, you can stick a broomstick type dowel or split 2x4 through for a roost. I have a plastic tub with a hole cut in the lid (sitting sideways), zip tied to the side of my little kennel chicken tractor. You can cover it with a tarp.

Oh yes, the monkey bars!

That is how I broke my arm...Weirdly and oddly, I fell out of a pickup on I-5 and came away with only a mile concussion and bruises. My brother had to spend the night in the hospital. Funny how we can get hurt more doing mundane things....

I fractured my dominant wrist in the 2nd grade on the monkey bars. Lost my grip and did a belly flop onto the ground. Landed right on my wrist with my torso. The yard duty told me to walk it off and get to class, that I was fine. My mom had to take my Nana to the hospital for a mammogram and since we were there she wanted to get me checked out to since I didn't usually cry unless something was actually wrong. The yard duty got an earful from mom when I came back to school with a cast on.
