he'd been butchered right there and thrown on the ladies doorI had a rooster attack me while I was delivering mail last year. The lady had him in her front yard (separated from her 3 hens in the back) because he was "mean" to them. I don't know he was there at first and he got me when I was walking away. He hit me on the back of my let with his spur. I went through my pants and my sock, and put a little hole in my leg.![]()
Miss Molly and Deann ( Just Struttin ) I believe still doesAnyone here have Swedish flowers?
ok, on bumblefoot: is it possible to have other little scab like things on the foot? I'm not sure if I could get a good pick but i'll try to describe it. So there are a few sections on each foot where the top layer seems gone and underneath is a darker KIND of scab like skin layer. One is definitely harder. I would hate to cut open these for the wrong thing. They aren't swollen. He has always had a limp for the last 4 months. I thought he just jumped down and hurt something. He grew REALLY FAST, so I chalked it up to an issue with that. I'll try to get a pic tomorrow. I just know my family will freak out if i try to get them to help me with surgery. That would be the last straw, lol! So I would be doing this myself, while everyone is gone![]()
Thanks Ron. I'll try that. He is getting pretty tame with all his handling here. He won't grow a tail cause his girls keep pecking it bad. So i got him a saddle, lol! I added onto it to make it cover the tail. I would add a pic, but he'd be horrified haha! So it should be easier to do the Vetricyn now.If there is no swelling it does not sound like bumble foot. I would spray twice a day with Vetricyn gel and see how it goes.
So handling them will make them better? I just figured not to tame them at all. But it sounds like if you pick them up, almost like you're examining them (feet, wings, mouth), may make it better. As oppose to just hand feeding or petting. Is that right Ron?It is more of a behavior thing and is likely more genetic than learned. You are not trying to attack him but gaining dominance over him. Pushing him back with a broom does that without hurting them. The reason many Show Quality or lines of a breed that are shown have less aggression is because they have been selectively bred for being less aggressive. If you really like the way this one looks, work with him this year and get a bunch of boy offspring. Cull the aggressive ones and breed from the one or two that are less aggressive next year. They will become much nicer quickly that way.
When one of them pecks me, I pick them up and carry them around for a bit. I do not know if it causes dominance in their minds but they usually calm down. Some do not though and then they do become soup no matter what! Life gets to be much simpler when a mean Boy is gone. The other chickens are happier too.
That's what I think about showing one or both of my Silver Penciled Wyandottes the coneHe's a blue English Orpington. That's expensive soup![]()
This is great advice!...I had to pick up one of my roos and cart him around. I took him in the house under my arm, he pecked Tom and I gave him a flick. Got a little guff from my uncle who said, "He's trying to show you who's boss." "It is more of a behavior thing and is likely more genetic than learned. Jeff, @Papa Brooder does. I got a gorgeous one from Deann @juststruttin . I picked the week old chick with the cutest personality as a buddy to the OE I was getting from her and of course it was a cockerel but he was amazing. The guy I sold him to contacted me recently too and said he is a good boy.Anyone here have Swedish flowers?
He could come with some breese pullets <<Ha ha I bet you WOULD. Brawny's our feathered beach ball... and yesterday he got bounced around lol. Don't feed my desire to collect chickens. What I need is a couple more hens to offset the two roosters we have.![]()

" I know," I told him "but he isn't"
"I don't think he agrees with you." he said
"Yeah, Well you don't see him carrying me under his wing do you."
end of conversation. My uncle has interesting ideas about animal husbandry...
Did you mean Plymouth Rocks because I think my Choc Rock pullet has laid an egg a day for a couple of months straight...She is huge, her egg is small but she gives us one every darned day..Love that bird!

I want @debs_flock to get back stateside so that I can negotiate an egg or chick dealI got the fever.
My flock is really starting to lay againI have 6 pullets now laying. One " older" hen re-started laying today and several more hens and pullets are now staking out the nest boxes acting all excited about eggs. I love my fresh eggs...the yolks are marigold/ mandarin orange and they taste SO much better than store bought.
I might just have to start hatching early this year. Maybe I can sell some extras at the March show in red bluff.
Trisha
It is so nice to get them laying again!
Try to time some hatches so that the pullet start laying in Late august to Early Sept. You should get them to lay through the winter that way.
