Well, I did hatch early, mid and late this year. But I ended up only keeping pullets from my last hatches in early summer. Next time I will be sure to keep some early hatched pullets too. I kept the late hatched pullets this year because I wanted genetics from hens that kept egg color the longest without fading, didn't go broody early on and laid well into the hotter temps. I also hatched in fall from the hens that laid all summer without stopping because of heat stress or going broody. This spring I will hatch from the pullets that were the first to lay and hens that needed no added light to re-start. Hopefully I will keep improving egg traits that I want this way.
I only keep barnevelders, so no rocks for me. I only want to keep my focus on one breed. I did have some silver pencilled rocks from show lines and the ones I got were horrible layers. Small eggs for their size and went broody after about 2 weeks of laying. My sis still has a huge gorgeous silver penciled hen...she has only gotten about 40 eggs out of her

I have one rock / barnie pullet. She did the same thing...went broody after 20+ eggs this year. Must be the strain of rocks I got... Maybe the next generation will be better, if not I will cull the whole silver project and start over.
