California - Northern

Yes! CAHFS at UCDavis.

Free for flocks under 1000. There is a limit of three per day.

I am sorry they are dieing on you!
So do I just download the backyard flock submission form and send it in?
I'm so bummed. I know the guys doing incubation services did not mean to inflict this on me but that doesn't make it any better. I HATE finding dead chicks. I had pre-sold this hatch and had to call all my customers and tell them what happened. I'm SO glad I didn't let these chicks go and send the problem on to someone else!

Well, I did hatch early, mid and late this year. But I ended up only keeping pullets from my last hatches in early summer. Next time I will be sure to keep some early hatched pullets too. I kept the late hatched pullets this year because I wanted genetics from hens that kept egg color the longest without fading, didn't go broody early on and laid well into the hotter temps. I also hatched in fall from the hens that laid all summer without stopping because of heat stress or going broody. This spring I will hatch from the pullets that were the first to lay and hens that needed no added light to re-start. Hopefully I will keep improving egg traits that I want this way.

I only keep barnevelders, so no rocks for me. I only want to keep my focus on one breed. I did have some silver pencilled rocks from show lines and the ones I got were horrible layers. Small eggs for their size and went broody after about 2 weeks of laying. My sis still has a huge gorgeous silver penciled hen...she has only gotten about 40 eggs out of her:( I have one rock / barnie pullet. She did the same thing...went broody after 20+ eggs this year. Must be the strain of rocks I got... Maybe the next generation will be better, if not I will cull the whole silver project and start over.

Trisha
I have a layer flock and then the ones I am breeding with the egg farmer in Winters. I managed to keep the eggs coming in this winter. I was able to sell 4 dozen eggs this week and 6 dozen last week--along with eggs for the 5 of us. We can sure go through the eggs!

What I am working on is keeping Blue, brown, green, white and Dark brown layers in the layer flock. I want to breed HRIRs and Penedesencas for improvement so I am focusing on two Breeds. I do not think I can handle more and work at the University too.

Yes, picking them up seems to tame them if they will be tamed. Petting is a bad idea since they can peck you quickly that way.

All Rocks are winter layers. I like the Partridge Rocks and the Silver Pencil Rocks since they are smaller and have a better feed conversion.

I like that about the CA Grey. Nice large egg from a small girl and my one Icelandic that is laying also lays an egg that is bigger than it seems she would lay.

Remember when I said I wasn't keeping my Icelandics...I lied. They make me laugh and Rue lays an egg almost every day. Hattie...my avatar...is holding out till the solstice I think but I picked her up the other day and she tolerated it so that's progress.

I have never tried to make friends with Ozzie and he is perfect except for his lack of "Pea fighting instinct" The darn peas NEVER would have attempted to go in the pen with Ray who couldn't even range much because he was so territorial with them and would have fought to the death...but under Ozzie's watch they make themselves at home and drive up my feed bill. I wish I could get Ozzie to be, not as agressive as Ray, but at least to defend his own hearth and home against them. Hope we get that thing covered with avian netting soon!

tommysgirl - I knew the Icelandics would grow on you. They are fantastic layers and molt super fast too. My Icelandics take 2 months to molt - then they are back to laying. (when they aren't broody of course)

Trisha - I'd love to see pictures of where you are in your silver project.

Last night was animal torture!
The roosters under my window started at 2, 3 quail were born and we're very upset with the whole no mother thing and we're squall in all night , and the cat decided to throw up in my ear.

Why do I do this again?....

You do it because they are so sweet!

I am relieved--I thought the Animals were tortured when I read the first line.

I could handle all of that, except the cat.

Does the moonlight get into the coop in the middle of the night? With the full moon, that could cause early crowing. I found on a full moon that my auto door was opening, which caused crowing. I went out and closed it, and the next morning I adjusted the sensor. No problems since.
