The color on the left egg is a bit light. The eggs are supposed to be a 5 on the Marans scale as a minimum. They may be lighter because they are at the end of a laying cycle? The egg on the right is very nice.

See, Your egg fits right in!

The Blue pullet is gorgeous!

Three eggs a week is good for any breed in the winter.
Thanks for the info @ronott1
The lighter egg is not a Marans egg. Should I try to find a better Ro to breed? But he is a brother so I was thinking he might have the right genes.
Happy Birthday @ronotti

I would try to find a Blue Marans Rooster. Brother to sister is ok for the first Generation though so if you can't find a new one you should be fine.

Hope today was a good one! Happiest of Birthdays to you! May all your hatches this year be 100%

Happy birthday Ron!

Well, I think I can very safely say I don't have any egg eaters--my older daughter told me that when she checked for eggs, there was a broken one. I went out to clean it up, and it looked like it was just a case of thin shell+egg ending up in the only bare spot in the nestbox+getting stepped on. It'd been there for a couple of hours between her checking and then telling me when I got home from work, and the egg was definitely squished and oozing, but there weren't any holes or bits of missing shell (well obviously some holes for the insides to ooze out, but no holes big enough to eat from).

Y'know, that sounded much more interesting in my head...

I can't remember whether I asked for 5 or 6 LF Dark Brahma. Either way, pm me your address when you order & I'll mail you a check! We are thrilled to increase our DB flock. This photo is of our lone pullet last Sept when she dressed as Polly for national "Talk like a pirate day." Her prop is pretty cute too

They are both adorable!

Happy birthday Ron!
I would say may all your hatches be pullets but you already got me there!!

Happy Birthday, Ron!

You go to a lot more trouble than I do. I KNOW the chickens eat the broken eggs some and then smear the rest around. I've seen one run over and GULP there went the small pullet soft shelled egg in one fell swoop. I was apalled.

I know they are not supposed to eat the eggs but as long as they are not breaking them open to eat them, I can't really stop it. After all, they dig in the compost pile all the time.

Today there was some broken eggs in the flower bed (we are having a contest to see who can find the most eggs NOT in the box, so far I'm winning at over 50 eggs in 4 days. Our chickens went on strike while we were gone) and the goober rooster was over there chortling like he'd found corn and worms. Of course they all came running for a taste. None really stuck around to gorge, so that was good.

On the same note, a really dumb chicken is just plopping them out while she's on the roost. Rather loosey goosey there! So plop! Out falls the egg into all the nighttime poo and sometimes it breaks. Then there's yolk all over the hen house as they step in it and track it around.

Mostly though, they don't eat the whole egg. They just give it a good peck to see what it may contain, then make a mess.

Lately its felt a lot like dealing with 30 toddlers.

It was plenty interesting to me. We speak chicken here so it is not like your normal place anywyay!

I had a thing shell this morning. One of the Amelias(Cream Legbar X Crele Penedesence) is working on getting her egg jets firing correctly. She is getting there! She is the one that lays a blueish egg.

They are both adorable!

Happy Birthday, Ron!
Thanks!

That is all normal stuff as we move into the new laying season. It is like they have to learn it all over again. Probably from having such a small amount of brain for storing memories.

Well, I did get pullets that were supposedly 7 and a half months old midSeptember and finally got my first egg less than a week ago... That may color how obsessed I am
wink.png
That, and I only have 5, and have a zoning-imposed maximum of 11, no roosters (I need a white layer, and a blue layer, and a dark brown layer, and a green layer, and/or an OE, and maybe some other color layer (the plum someone mentioned a few weeks ago, for instance)... I've got light brown pretty well covered.)

None of my internet homes could be called "normal" by any stretch of the imagination

Certainly not my main internet home, where I've been for 12 1/2 years now! They get to hear about my chickens, too, but not quite as many details as here (except for when I link a post to there from here).
